What to carry onto the ship

I have read to carry on swim suits and drinks- we don't drink alcohol... So maybe just water bottles? My main question is... How MUCH can each person carry onto the ship? A bag and a case of water? Or a bag and purse? Or do we not need to worry about carrying on too much?

I've never known of any sort of carry-on limit... That being said, anything you carry on, you will have to haul around with you until the rooms are ready!

There is no limit to how much you can take onboard, including checked luggage, other than what you can store in your room.

As above, there's really no limit to the number of carryons you can bring onboard. There is a max size (22X14X9) for fitting through the scanner. You will be lugging whatever you bring onboard around with your until the rooms are ready, usually aroung 1:30.

Also, there's no need to bring water onboard. All the water onboard is processed the same as bottled water (reverse osmosis and filtered). We just bring our own personal water bottles and fill up in our room.

You'll want to carry on anything you absolutely have to have before your luggage arrives in your cabin which can be as late as dinner-time the first day. So you'll want medicine, sunscreen, sunglasses, swimsuits (if you want them), camera, obviously all your identification and stuff you need for checking in. We also carry on whatever electronics we're bringing with us in case there is wait-time in the terminal before boarding (ipods, kindles, etc.) for the kids to be occupied. We typically bring a small toiletry bag in our carryon, too - toothbrush, hairbrush, hair ties (it can get windy onboard), deoderant just in case our bags haven't arrived by dinner time.

DCL's official policy is that no more than 2 bags per person are allowed but in 28 DCL cruises and 15 years of cruising DCL I have never heard or seen that policy enforced.

From the Terms and Conditions page at the DCL website:

Baggage, Valuables and Other Possessions
Each Guest may bring aboard the ship a reasonable amount of clothing and personal effects without charge, not to exceed two bags per person. All Guest baggage must be stored in the Guest's stateroom and must be labeled with the Disney Cruise Line baggage tag. Dangerous or illegal articles such as weapons, explosives, oxygen, combustible substances or nonprescription controlled substances may not be brought to the Walt Disney World Resort or taken aboard the ship. Any such items shall be surrendered to the Master of the vessel at embarkation, and may be disposed of at the sole discretion of the Master. You should retain valuables such as cash, negotiable securities or other financial instruments, gold, silverware, jewelry, ornaments, works of art, photographic/video/audio equipment or supplies, laptop computers, cellular phones or other valuables in your personal control as Disney Cruise Line is not responsible for damage to or loss of these items.

Personally I don't like to lug anything around. I have the bare minimum. Remember if you take medication regularly, you will need to bring that on with you. I have seen people with so much, you'd think they were permanently moving onto the ship!!!! I say, unless it is absolutely necessary (like meds), put it in your checked luggage and enjoy. You will see you luggage soon enough.

Thank you for all of your replies!! That helps! I love the bring your own bottle and refill it (duh- much better then bringing water bottles) so, where does everyone change into their swim suits of we aren't allowed in our rooms? - I'm a newbie! Should we bring a towel too? Thanks again for all your comments!

You can either wear you suits under you clothes, or change in the restroom onboard. No changing rooms at the pools.

There are towels at the pool areas.

There are several public area restrooms so don't feel like you have to compete for space in the ones near the pool for changing. There are public restrooms near each of the main dining rooms which are easy enough to locate.

There is no mention of a weight limit for checked bags on the DCL site that I have found. However, if you are flying in, the weight limits of your airline would apply, unless you are willing to pay for overweight bags.

Pretty sure our disney cruise line book that comes in the packet said bags need to be less than 50 lbs each. Makes sense, just like airports to save employees backs, yet I bet they don't charge you if they are like airlines do.

Do they do a normal dinner seating rotation? If rooms aren't ready until after dinner or we don't get our luggage until after, do we dine without the ability to get ready (shower, change clothes, etc)? That would justify the need for a larger carry on for sure if I'm having to schlep dinner clothes too.
