Northern Michigan!! Sleeping Bear Dunes (rated by GMA as the most beautiful place in America), Mackinac Island, loads of fantastic coastal towns, great beaches. We love it for a vacation. You can rent a house, or a condo. Great restaurants. Fantastic! Even when we didn't live in Michigan, we would go there on vacation.

Aaah pocomom, the great thing about that is you do recognize that there is whole world out there!!! We're city folk in my family, one of our favorite places to go is Washington DC. Dh and I love, loved, loved Vegas. Of course we love Walt disney but since my kids love swimming and water activities our favorite has to be St Thomas and St Johns. We're off to London/Paris this year. first time with the kids so that will be interesting

On to your question: we spend quite a bit of time in Hilton Head, at the in-laws. Very family friendly, and sort-of the opposite of Disney, without sacrificing convenience. Feels almost like going to mountain lake, but you're on the beach. Activities are low-key, like biking, nature trails, and sand castles....there's no go-kart tracks, ferris wheels, water parks, boardwalks, and only a few mini-golf places.

Another vote for a cruise. We love DCL! It's a great way to visit places without being stuck there for a week. If you don't like a port just get back on the ship.

Not sure how old your kids are but mine are 5, 9 & 10. Our favorite vacations have been:
1) Costa Rica- beautiful & so many amazing activities 2) St John- we rent a house & relax on the beautiful beaches 3) All inclusives in Mayan Riviera- fun for everyone & so reasonably priced 4) Hilton Head- again very relaxing And of course Disney & Universal (well, me & the kids, DH hates theme parks!)

Other than WDW, we usually go the Smoky Mtn. National Park for a couple weeks. We love the hikes, biking in Cades Cove, and camping inside the park near Gatlinburg, by a stream (river). So very relaxing.

England was awesome. I went when I was a tenn with my parents. With my kids we haven't done a lot. There is so much in California to explore. We have done a long weekend to SF and we have gone camping.

Besides WDW our other favorite vacations are Hawaii, Grand Canyon/Monument Valley, San Diego, and while we were stationed overseas our faves were a cruise to Greece/Turkey, Ireland & London.
