star trek movie and kids?

dh and I saw the star trek movie that came out a couple of years ago. I had never seen anything star trek at all, liked it well enough, we are looking forward to the new one that is now out.

What I can't remember is how kid friendly it is. our kids are 11/9/9, and love movies like the avengers and ironman, thor, Indiana jones, star wars. we aren't comfortable with batman yet.

how does star trek stack up. I wish I could remember if there was anything that isn't so kid friendly in the first one. have it in our Netflix queue and on hold at the library, but if dh gets a bee in his bonnet to see the new one this weekend, do we leave the kids home or possibly take them?

DD and I saw it last week (it opened last Wednesday here in Germany).

The only questionable things for those ages (IMO) would be some battle scenes with bombs going off or the ship being damaged, etc that involve people dying and some of those include bodies being sucked out into the vacuum of space while screaming. None of them are overly gruesome or focus on the carnage though.

I would be as comfortable with it as with the movies you list (of those I have seen).

The violence is on par with the other movies listed. Benedict Cumberbatch's character is particularly vicious.

Less sex than Iron Man. There are one or two "sexual situations", but it's mostly innuendo.

The "S word" is used three or four times.

On the link above if you hover over "Violence" for example it will show you exactly what is contained in the movie. Or you can click on Expand for details.

Another site, which is the one we used to use when the kids were young enough that we checked this sort of thing, is http://www.kids-in-mind.com/

If those are the kind of movies the like, they will love the new Star Trek. It's right in league with those films. If they haven't seen the first movie yet, they should probably check it out before they see the new one.

Personally, I would not hesitate to take and 11 or 9 year old to a Star Trek Movie.

In addition to the violence previously mentioned (nothing graphic) there is one brief (5 seconds) scene where Kirk wakes up with two women and one scene (briefer) where a girl is seen in her underwear and bra whilst changing. There is also the occasional swearing (nothing major). Personally. I would have no issues with kids that age seeing it (and hope that you do as it is a great movie).
