Cruise with Green Card - The DIS Discussion Forums

I'm having a terrible time with finding information on this. My friend is a Resident of the US however NOT a Citizen, what is required for him to Cruise? Any help is highly appreciated!

If no passport and it's a closed loop, a green card is fine. I had to check into it for my husband. That being said, he is still getting his passport before our cruise. But if a good Florida resident deal opens for us, we will go earlier on his green card.

I am a Canadian citizen with a Green Card. I always, always sail with a passport and my Green Card. Just makes immigration much, much easier.

A word of advice, have your friend look at his Green Card, and see if it has an expiration date. My most recent Green Card was processed in the '90's, and it was supposed to be a "non-expiring" card. There is no expiration date on it. This was great, because I did not have to remember to renew the card every few years, and deal with unfriendly people in the government offices (workers in US Immigration offices will never have to worry about getting smile wrinkles!

Lo and behold, requirements have changed, and the last time I traveled, I was told I had to get a new Green Card, or I would be detained. Over $400 later, I am waiting for the new card (takes 6 - 10 months, so if your friend needs one, he should know this).

Cards now have to be updated every 10 years. Between passport fees every 5 years and Green Card fees, it is expensive to stay legal, but if one wishes to travel and return home to children in the States, it must be done!

DH is a "legal alien" I often just think he is an alien. Anyhow he just traveled with his passport but always carries his green card. (you are suppoed to anyway that is the law) He has applied for citizenship, after being here for almost 19 years. hopefully will have new American passport for our cruise to Alaska in September.
