You have no idea what context the comment was made in.

OP - you have absolutely NO idea what context that comment was made in. If the wife was 10 feet away and was not upset, it obviously was something they kid about all the time. If she was not upset, why in the world would a random stranger get their blood pressure up enough to post it on a message board?

Or is there the proverbial more information to follow, like the wife scowled at the comment or something similar?
I'm convinced if the outside world heard 1/2 the things we say to each other in a very saracastic kidding way they would be mortified. However...now if a stranger came up to us and said the same thing -- would be totally offensive.

This reminds me of DD's ringtone for me! People get all upset with her because she has Ding Dong the Witch is Dead for my ringtone on her phone. I think it's hilarious!!! She tells me, people get all bent out of shape when it rings & she says "oh that's my mom calling".

I agree that I would assume it is a joke. We joke around all the time--I think it is one reason we are still totally head over heels in love after 17 years of marriage and 21 of couplehood

And it would seem for that family, the time and place wasn't a problem.

Yesterday, I had a slip-up. My DD13 and I went into Hobby Lobby. We were just looking around at nothing in particular, and I mentioned that we needed a decorative piece on one of our end tables. My dd was standing right in front of a display of glass and mirrored balls - the ones that are to be arranged in a bowl. She immediately says, "You could get a bowl and put a few of these balls in it." Without thinking I reply, "No, we have enough balls in our house." (-And yes. I meant it as a crack at the boys in our home.) She laughs and says, "True." We start to continue down the aisle, and as I look up, I notice a lady is frowning at me, but her husband is laughing. I guess they overheard our comments.....I just smiled and continued shopping.

That is your family. It doesn't make it disrespectful in the context of that family.

If you thought that was bad you would have been mortified when I said my family needs to line up and all get punched in their face.

And I'm sure that there are things that happen within the OP's family that that family would find disrespectful.
