Haven't flown since 1999 - ?s about TSA guidelines

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but we haven't flown anywhere since 1999 when we flew to Disney World for our honeymoon.

Can you put the spray cans of sunscreen in your checked baggage? The TSA website talks about aerosol cans but I'm still unsure.

Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. We are flying with a 6 and 10 year old and this will be the girls first plane trip - flying is a surprise - we usually drive from Texas every two years.

TIA

The TSA isn't really the relevant agency; for checked baggage, the general concern is safety, not security.

The rules of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Administration (PHMSA) allow aerosols to be included in checked baggage for personal/medical use (i.e., deodorant, not spray paint) as long as each item is 500 ml or smaller, and the total is 2 liters or less. See 14 C.F.R. 175.10.

But that rule may not apply to your sunscreen if what you're referring to is a "pump," not an aerosol. I haven't found any clearly applicable rule. Assuming that sunscreen in itself would not be considered "hazardous", there probably isn't a limit. (Of course, fellow travelers still would be appreciative if you made sure they don't leak...)

PHMSA has posted a flyer about what can and can't be carried under its regulations, but unfortunately it isn't particularly helpful because it doesn't get into specifics - http://www.phmsa.dot.gov/staticfiles...se_May_Not.pdf.

Yes, you can put these in checked bags. I suggest placing them in a ziploc bag in case of leakage.

ITA with this. DW and I were each able to take 3 cans of the Neutrogena sunscreens with us on our checked bags without any problems. Good thing we put them in baggies because one some how managed to almost spray completely empty.

Aerosol cans of personal care products, such as hairspray or sunscreen (basically anything that would be applied to your body), are perfectly acceptable in checked bags. Other aerosols, such as disinfectant sprays, are not permitted.

Considering TSA ultimately has the say on all baggage, they really are the relevant agency to consult. Even if a product is safe to travel and approved by another authority, TSA ultimately determines its fate.
