A powerful blast that shattered windows and left a smoky trail across the sky in eastern Russia appears to have been caused by a meteor or fireball, according to Russian officials and news reports.

The strange sight and blast occurred early Friday (Feb. 15) in the Russian region Ural Mountains and is initially being attributed to a meteor explosion in the atmosphere by authorities, according to a Reuters report.

Holy Crow.
Make sure you read the clips about the videos. They were all really quiet, and I wasn't ready for that explosion and about flew out of my chair.
That was LOUD!!!
I now understand the reports of broken glass! The shock wave must have been something else!

That would have scared me to death...literally. Makes you think about how devastating one of the really big ones would be.

Me and my dd10 were watching videos of it before school and then I found the one with sound... I turned the speakers all the way up so I could hear it.. We both jumped and then she ducked for cover.. it was hilarious!

THANKS for the thread OP. Holy cow is this amazing. I cannot find anything on our NEWS (TV).

I cannot wait for the reports.

Now they are saying 500 injured!!!

This has to be related with the asteroid passing by us today. My guess is they are going to say that this meteorite was traveling with the "Asteroid 2012 DA 14".

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/16/wo...eria.html?_r=0

Off to do more googling and look at the video Jane posted.

Astronomer Neil Degrass Tyson said on the Today show this morning that it was NOT related to the asteroid -- that if it were, we would see many more meteorites, and it came way too long before the asteroid is due to pass by us to be related. He said it's just a coincidence.

Tell her I completely understand! I'll bet there were people panicked in Russia yesterday. That was really something else!

Compilation of several vids.

The time it takes the shock wave (boom) to hit shows how high up it really was.

I REALLY want to see where this thing landed.....

Wow. No wonder they have dash cameras. Thanks for sharing, it's something I never knew & makes me thankful I don't live there.

OK, this probably sounds stupid, but did they have any idea this thing was coming? Scientists are watching the sky/space all the time aren't they?
