Family of 5 questions

We are in the beginning stages of contemplating taking a cruise. We are DVC members- so will probably do a land/sea type trip.

I was pricing family room vs 2 staterooms. I always read 2 staterooms was cheaper but as I priced it out- it wasn't...

If we do WDW first and sail from Miami- is it up to us to get down there or does Disney transfer?

Are cruises out of Port Canaveral more expensive than Miami?

Our kids are 2,4,6. We would probably wait until 2015 to go when the youngest is more self sufficient and can enjoy the excursions and activities.

Also, if we go in February- how is the weather on the boat and islands?

Generally, it is cheaper to do 2 rooms than a family room. Sometimes not.

You would have to get from WDW to Miami yourself.

The cruise price isn't necessiarily dependant on the port they sail from. It has to do with the itinerary, port fees, popularity of any given cruise.

Sorry, don't know about weather in February in that part of the world.

Hi! We are a family of 5 and have similar issues. We find the deluxe family rooms to be best suited for us. I don't know about the trasnfers from Miami to WDW, but if you are going out of Port Canaveral we usually book a private 3 way trasnfer from the airport to cruise to WDW and then we take the Disney bus to the airport.

FWIW we didn't taken ds (then 2) the first year we went and I think that was the right answer. We took him last year (just 3) and, we all had a good time. He hung up out with his older sisters at the club, had a blast in the Mickey pool and just generally loved it.

Thanks! I priced several cruises yesterday and the family room was cheaper. That could be because of what's left.

I think with the ages of your children, a family room would be better logistically than two cabins.

Are you looking specifically to sail from Miami or would you be ok with the itineraries from Port Canaveral?

I think the 2 cabins is only cheaper if you book inside. We wanted outside cabins (I'm totally clausterphobic if I can't see outside), and 2 was WAY more expensive then just one deluxe family oceanview for a family of 5.

For us it was going to be about $75 cheaper to book two porthole rooms than one Deluxe Family Suite w/ Verandah. I actually preferred the porthole rooms because we have very mischievous toddlers, but there were not two connecting porthole rooms still available for our September cruise. I am a little anxious about the verandah, but we will just be extra diligent with them.

It can be cheaper if you book at least one of the rooms inside (if not both).

Regarding the other questions,

* There's no DCL transportation from WDW to Miami. You'll have to drive the 4+ hours yourself or get a car service. In your case, note that DCL charges $70 per person round trip to Port Canaveral. For a family of 5, you are better off with a car service or renting a car.

* Recent Miami cruises have not done that well and Disney had to resort to many special offers - you missed Kids sail free for example - 5 in the same room and the 3 kids for free. For 2014, one classic ship is moving to PC and the other is staying for Miami. But nobody knows yet what would happen on the second half of '14 or even later. You should count on the big ships on staying in PC however.

* The younger one would have to go to the nursery today and/or until is toilet trained. After that, the kids would be able to go to club/lab and have a blast. Maybe plan for 2015 but if a special offer comes out in 2014, jump on it!

* February temps are still nice 75-80. Water in CC is a little chilly, but warmer in the caribbean ports.

When the kids were younger, we always booked two porthole cabins - CONNECTING. We would tie the doors open with bungee cords and let the kids sleep in one and we would sleep in the other. This gave us SOOOOO Much more room than a family verandah! I'm talking about an extra closet to store the carseats and an extra bathroom to get everyone ready for dinner.

We won't go back to one room now. But we do upgrade to connecting verandahs when the cost isn't too much more. With the new ships you can actually connect the verandahs!

But nothing beats that extra space! It's like having a suite, but paying for a regular room. Now that the new ships offer family porthole cabins and cheaper verandah cabins, we haven't actually compared. But now, it's really too late to go back to just one room, when we're used to so much space.

Good luck! Just know you do have tons of options!

We are a family of 5 and going in March 2014, I booked 2 connecting inside cabins Cat 10A and it was much cheaper than a family room. Not to mention that we get 2x rooms, bathrooms, space and 2x on board credit

It works better for my family my sons will be 13, 11 and 11 at the time of sailing. On of them is already 6' tall so he is much happier is a big bed!

and whom ever said girl took too much time in the bathroom never lived in a family of boys and they were wrong!! So 2 bathroom is a must

I priced out 3,4,5 night cruises and the family was cheaper then the 2 rooms every time...maybe I'm not doing something right...

I would love to go out of port canaveral but its more expensive and I really would like to have 2 days at sea, so the 5 night in Miami makes the most sense. We are DVC, so we can combine points and cash to save some out of pocket expenses...

I do not know your dates but I just priced a 5 day cruise from Miami Feb 2014. 2 inside cabine cat 11B was 2747.10$ and a family suite cat 4E was 3347.10$

When you price the 2 rooms you have to put 2 (1A + 1Child) and 3 (1 adult & 2 kids) in the other room.

Just for fun I priced 2 inside staterooms on our crusie next January (11C). Total came to 5,572.75 (this is for 1A 2C in one and 1A 1C in the other). On the same cruise (7 night western fantasy) a deluxe family oceanview with veranda (4D) is $5516.75. There are no deluxe family oceanview staterooms (without veranda) left, but that would be even cheaper if there was. So 2 of pretty much the lowest category staterooms you can get are more than one room for 5 with a veranda!

We are also a family of 5 and it was always cheaper on the classic ships to get two inside staterooms vs the deluxe family stateroom...by like $1500. However, with the new ships it is cheaper to get a deluxe family stateroom than two inside staterooms. We found this out when we were on the Magic in 2010 and the on board booking lady said the Fantasy (which wasn't built yet, but taking bookings) was doing their family staterooms cheaper than the classic ships. There weren't going to be as many family staterooms on the new ships so it would be best to book one while we could. So we did! . (Setting sail in two weeks!) (cruising out of Port Canaveral...don't know about costs at the other ports)

Don't forget when booking 2 rooms for 5 people that each room is based on double occupancy so even if you put your youngest in with your DH or DW, your child will still be charged the adult rate.

We will be booking again on board in two weeks....will check the prices out again at that time. Lovin the 10% discount though...makes a big difference!

Another family of 5 here - and much like a previous poster - we just can't give up the extra space and extra bathrooms two rooms provide. Plus, having the ability to spend some time "together, but apart" is great.

We've always found the cost comparable - not necessarily significantly cheaper one way or the other.
