Oh such a conspiracy to hide the truth of the great candy glut!

I work in customer service and a gesture, such as a gift of candy, has always meant a good deal to me and those I've worked with. Sure it's our job, it's what we're paid for, but someone taking that extra step to recognize your work makes you feel good.

I think that by now, I would have come across one less that sincere expression of appreciation from a cast member, but that has never been the case.

And why does it bother you at all? Did noone ever give you candy?

OK, so I gift a CM with candy, it makes me feel good. The CM takes it with an appreciative attitude, it makes me feel good, and the CM is doing their job (hopefully making them feel good). What the CM does with it (keep it, eat it, share it, toss it), that's up to them, and it makes them feel good. I feel good, the CM feels good, everybody's happy.

What's wrong with that?

A smile and little treat may mean something to them; if you offer cash, they are not allowed to keep it.

You can take the same approach to the guy who works the lights or the sound board in the theater (on the new ships, they sit out where you can see them.) On our most recent Fantasy cruise we were really impressed as one guy came in and talked to some of the kids, telling them he "helped to make the magic happen." We described him on our comment card because I was so impressed with his guest interaction. Again, not someone who would normally be recognized unless he messed up.

I don't drag a bunch of candy onto the ship to hand out....but I may bring a bag of single serving somethings that don't melt. If it makes someone's day special, so be it. If not, it cost me a grand total of $3-4 per cruise.
I have done exactly this...handed out treats at random times to crew members that I knew didn't get the same level of recognition as some of the more well-known positions. Afterall, how many people do you suppose mention the name of one of those castmembers on the comment card?

I like the person that said "whatever floats your boat" and since when I am at home, I am known as the person that gives cards or leaves notes at random times, it suits my personality. I have never gotten anything but smiles and thank you's...and it makes me happy to do something kind and unexpected for someone else. (And yes, I do provide cash tips...very well, in fact)

Just think it is a weird thing to do and after reading many of these threads I question the motives of many of the people that do this.

What motive would we have? We want people to be happy? That's bad?

The way I read many of the posts is that people do it to make themselves feel good, not necessarily the crew member.

So glad to see that a differing opinion can be expressed in a thread without someone getting their nose out of joint.

I hope someone doesn't give you a just because I was thinking of you present because that might make that person who gave it to you feel good....

Thank you to those of you who answered my question as to whether or not they receive tons of candy. This board is such a wealth of great information I find it hard to believe everyone isn't here! I also didn't think about those who do not accept tips. I look forward to getting some little gifts ready to show my thanks for a job well done.
