Talking Candy for CMs?

I have a question that never even occurred to me, and hope someone can help.

My DW and I are going on the Wonder next week, so I went to Costco and bought some boxes of candy bars & M&Ms for the Cast & Crew members we encounter. A number of the secrets and/or hints describe how the crew members don't get much taste variety in their diets, and so appreciate candy. Having worked on a ship in deep ocean, I can empathize!

However (and here's the question): How do I give it to them? Do I keep candy bars in my pockets and hand them out retail? Do I give an entire box of 24 candy bars to my stateroom host? I never even thought about this until I had the candy.

Has anyone done this, and can you give me some guidance about what works best? I don't want to cause any awkwardness for anyone, but would like to do something nice for them

Thanks,
Richard

I always take gifts like this for the cast members. Usually a box of candy in some variety. I plan for giving one to our stateroom host, server, head server and assistant server. Usually bring a few extras for other cast members who might provide a magical experience. I bring gift bags and some tissue and make a present out of them. Tend to give them out the last or next to last day.

Whichever way works best (or most comfortably) for you. I will point out if you give the whole box to one person, that person will probably keep the whole box, but they might share. Handing them out individually, maybe more people would get them. I would just hand them to the person(s) I wanted to give them to.

We've also left bags of candy in our room (we took them to eat, but for some reason never got them eaten). We told our room host they were for him.

Like a previous poster, we give gifts such as these out on the last night. We use gift bags and place their name on the bag that is intended for them. They can keep the stuff that is marked appropriately. We went all out and took Bath and Body Works stuff and other small gifts on board on our Christmas 2011 Cruise. We gave such items to our Server and Asst. Server, room host and others as we saw them. They really appreciate the gesture. DO NOT give them the gifts early if you don't want something back from them. I do not want them to be obligated to repay me for me repaying them for great service. Awkward!

You can do this any way you want....hand them out personally on the last night or randomly throughout the cruise, take a box to Guest Services and ask them to be delivered to XYZ department (engine room? theater tech crew? other often overlooked department?) Carry some individual serving bags of M&Ms in your pocket and give them to the random yellow jumpsuit guys you'll see on the pool deck or to the security guy logging you in or out at the gangway?

The bottom line is....whatever floats your boat. There is no wrong way to make someone's day.

We left some each day for our stateroom hostess with cute little notes like "hope your day is out of this out of this world" with a Milky Way, "you've been a real life saver" with a tin of LifeSavors, "you've made magical memories for us" with m&ms, etc. Be creative and have fun!

Sorry, just not understanding this. Why not tip cash and let the CM decide what to treat themselves to?

Do a lot of people bring candy in for gifts? That could be quite a lot of candy for the CMs. I haven't gone on a cruise yet so I don't know. I guess I am afraid of giving them something that they have buckets full of already.

We're talking about in addition to the cash tips. Just a little something extra for the ones who might stand out a bit.

No, a "lot of people" don't. Some people do. It's entirely up to you.

I always do this in addition to generous tipping.

Everyone that we've given candy to has been sooooo happy to get it. (we have a special 'secret' candy that the room service people obviously bragged to others about, because the next guy that came shyly admitted he already knew about it and was very excited!!) Many of these people would not ever go buy candy for themselves, as getting off the ship and going to WalMart is not always easy for them.

Not to be weird but do they really want this? Most of the CMs (room stewards, engine guys, etc) are middle aged people from other countries. Do they really want candy? Other than cash and phone cards, I'm not sure how appreciative they will be of candy? I know they have very limited room in their "cabins." How do you know they're not just being polite?
