Sewer smell on ships?
Do the staterooms stink? I've noticed several posts today referencing stinky rooms and sewer smells on the classic ships. I had also saw air freshener on several packing lists and had assumed that was due to smell of people currently using the restroom in a cabin, not the ghost of sewage past

Three times on the Magic and three times on the Wonder, in 5 different rooms. No sewer smells here.

We had the sewer smell in the master bath in the Roy (cat R) on the Fantasy last summer. They were very aggressive to investigate and fix problem. They were very apologetic and the concierge staff gave us a collectible momento to keep for our 'trouble'

The reqiurements for the handling and treatment of waste wate on ocean going vessels, especailly cruise ships have put a strain on the techonogy to system and operate them.
I truth is all cruise ships, every once in a long while with have a minor (well minor or worse, depending on your nose) smell problems, including Disney. This is really qiute rare, you just see and read about it more on the forums. AKK |

I found the toilets on the Magic to smell horrific. I would gag every time I had to use that bathroom. I kept the toilet seat down when it wasn't being used and that kept the smell confined to the toilet and bathroom.
I loved the Magic and thought it was such a beautiful ship. This was my only real complaint. I am hoping the Fantasy doesn't have this issue.

Was on the Wonder jan 14-19 2013 and only noticed the smell around day three. It was centralized in the bathroom(we had a split) and I kept the toilet lid closed when not in use and you couldn't smell anything. My fiancé says she never smelled it, but I noticed. It wasn't bad just a little off putting.

Yes! Was on the 14 day Hawaii on the Wonder in October and definitely had a smell. I can't remember how they explained it but it had up do with a normal process. There are vents at the bottoms of the bathrooms under the sinks in both bathrooms. When things were 'full' at the end of a 4 day stretch and the ship was rocky I smelled it more. They had to put tape over the vents. It might not be as noticeable on trips where there aren't long stretches of sea days. If you notice they 'empty' brown stuff (don't know what that is) under water from one side of the ship (we were starboard side) every morning when the ship docks. That kind of stank too.

Btw, I didn't notice it on our 7 day MR on the wonder but there weren't as many consecutive sea days.

We've cruised DCL 9 times and have not had any issues with sewage smell.
That being said when we were on the Dream in Nov 2012 in concierge on Deck 11, our neighbors in the 1BR accessible room (11006) reported awful smells in the master bathroom. They were unable to fix it for the short duration of the cruise. Needless to say they were unhappy and stated at the time that they were planning to sail the classics exclusively for the service, space and longer itineraries. No more Dream for them.

Ive noticed it on the ships several times, and not all the times in the rooms. It took a while, and I think I know where its coming from, since we have the same problem where I work on occasion. On the floors of the bathrooms, are drains. Under the floor they are designed to hold a certain amount of water, to keep gasses etc. from backing up. If the traps, dry out for any number of reasons,(normal evaporation, wave action etc) the smell will start to come out into what ever room the trap is in. All you really need to do, is to take 2 or 3 glasses of water, and pour it down the drains in the floors. Not the 1 in the bathtub, the one on the floor. It should solve the problem. It kind of came to me after talking to a room steward who said they had solved the problem in 1 room by taping off the floor vent/drain, and here at work where in a brand new bldg, the water that is supposed to go in to the drain, everytime you turn on the sink, didnt work because debris got into the lines. Simple fix, pour a couple of glasses of water into the floor drain and see what happens.

So would some locations on the ship be more prone to this or does it not matter where you are?
