Security cameras

Have you noticed security cameras in the hallways and other areas of the ships? I've not noticed them, but I assume they must be there. It got me thinking when people have talked about having fish extenders stolen. Are the cameras hidden?

I have always wondered about this. An acquaintance of mine from college disappeared from a cruise ship on his honeymoon somewhere between Greece and Turkey (this was not a DCL ship) and I wondered if they had security cameras and were able to track his movements at all but it appeared from the information that I read, they didn't have any cameras at least in the hallway outside his room where he it is believed his went (was pushed, fell, ??) overboard. It is such a sad state of affairs with no solid answers -- video footage would have helped immensely.

It is questionable if there are cameras in the hallways on the ships. If there are, not likely they are closely monitored. This is based on videos of teens vandalizing many areas of the ship that they posted on YouTube. DCL was not aware of anything that had occured until they were alerted to the videos by others.

I have seen cameras on the outside of the ship. The ones I have seen are on deck 4 that would give a veiw if a person was going overboard. Additionally, when the crew member disappeared on the Mexica Riveria cruise, DCL kept stating the crew member looked distraught on cameras. DCL also mentioned seeing the crew member making a phone call. I assumed it was a cell phone. I have also seen cameras in the dining rooms. But I have never seen cameras in the halls.

From the L. A. Times dated June 11, 2011

Rebecca Coriam, a 24 year old from Chester, England, joined Disney Cruise Line to work with kids as a youth counselor. On March 22nd of this year, she failed to show up for work. As the article explains, she was last seen speaking on the telephone early in the morning and was apparently crying. A closed circuit television camera (CCTV) recorded these images, yet Disney claims that there are somehow no CCTV images of her going overboard

I have seen cameras near the elevators and outside on Deck 4. There are none in the hallways that are visible, if any.

I noticed the ones on Deck 4 on the Wonder. I remember commenting to my wife that there were cameras to catch the video if someone fell overboard, but there isn't an alarm to pull to let someone know the minute it happens. I thought that was odd.

i think more than most realize esp. in certain areas.

...i know i had an unpleasant encounter on our 2008 cruise
with a nasty lady. she attacked me when she noticed i
was taking movies on pirate night.( how dare another
cruiser take a public space that- she had claimed earlier,
though there was no one there)...i was there nearly 30
minutes before she turned around. the details of her
actions were quite funny and made the poor kid with
her very uncomfortable- esp when she tried to rammed
me off by--using him as a "battery ram". when that
didn't work, she left to get her husband....however,
that didn't work either- so she then try by making up
the story i had "hit" her to a security officer. i had
enough! & asked him to checked the cameras. that
when things changed- when he returned & asked if i wanted
to press charges. if she had knocked my camera out
of my hand , i would have. but that experience made
me realized they do have cameras though i have
never seen them.

oh while that was a great cruise, there were some strange
things that made me realized disney cruises are not
without dangers. another cruiser was too intrusive
toward our daughter, so as soon as i "felt" he went too
far,( we were watching after the first one), i set a strong
"verbal" limit with him. he never bother her again. we also
had our 2 sons & we did not think one lady over-xposing
herself should have been redirected by the crew. she might
have been ok @ a playboy party, but not on a disney cruise.
and i know another cruiser in our group got "crush" @ one
of the shows & suffered shoulder injuries.

they should have cameras where they have problems
repeating. and they should confront those acting out
by citing the guilty with "warnings".

awhile back , i read there was a physical fight on
one of the ship. if ever, i or my family are ever attack ,
by another person ...i am requesting the video. the
thing i noticed it was some of the same group that
were with us on the 2008 cruise. there are bullies on some
of these cruises & i think using cameras can reduce
their intrusions. there was a drawing where we won
2 sketches & the cast member had too "scold" the
crowd- as if we had done something wrong by winning. on
another cruise, (dvc member ), we won 2 again...but the
crowd didn't say anything...because we sent our son
up & he is 6'-5" ,275. on our alaska cruise, an elderly
lady crowded in front of me @ the characters greet.
{ we support families in our community & take
pictures so they can give to their children}. l had
been "early" & talking with the cm so he knew what
she had done, but i let her "in" because it seem
so important to her.

on a prior cruise , i became ill @ the greet & try to leave.
i told the guys behind me but instead of making a lane,
they grabbed their hands together. i just bust through.
they tried to give me their "mean" look, but i was too
ill to care...what i should have done, was throw up
on them..bet that would have made them moved.

on another thread, someone had their camera stolen. too
bad they didn't check if it was caught on camera. what
a horrible thing to do. then on the craziest thing one
have seen on dcl---thongs seem too frequent. can't
see why anyone would want that kind of attention. though
we've been together for decades, i still get a big kick
out of my wife "lady~like" behaviors. she is just as adorable
as the day we met...& it was her lady~like behaviors that
caught my eye.

I think the side ship cameras are located on the top of the bridge that sticks out from the side of the ship. I saw them from Walt suite veranada.

The cost has gone down for this kind of tech, especially pinhole cameras.

You can buy your own Foscam these days and monitor it on your smartphone while out. Or have it send you email pics when someone comes to your door.

If DCL hasn't done this in their halls, they should.

I totally agree. In fact, for a line that targets families with young kids, I'd really expect them to face legal issues if there weren't cameras in hallways. They may not be able to prevent people from harming kids or adults, but the least they could do is help identify and prosecute wrongdoers.

While wireless cameras are becoming more affordable, cruise ships are not a good environment for their use. The ships would require wired cameras, which can be an incredibly expensive and time consuming process. It's not something they can just throw in. The new ships have more cameras in general due to the new regulations that were coming down the pipe when they were being built. The classics may receive more during their major re-fits. The kind of coverage places like casinos have is the exception and not the rule. There are always going to be blind spots.

Just wondering why cruise ships wouldn't be an ideal environment. My friend does this for a living (commercial grade routers and IP cameras in stadiums and large office buildings/hospitals, retrofit if necessary).

It's a self-contained network after all, no? Time stamped surveillance on the ship's own server.

Avoiding one lawsuit would more than pay for it.

Putting them in is the issue, If the ship isn't built with them in, its vert hard to add them later simply because they have to run the wires. Ships try and use all the space they can and don't have room to spare for things like drop ceilings which make running wires easier. They can't use wireless because of all the metal, it blocks the signal.
