Sounds crowded! And you guys were in corral C - probably only got worse for the people behind you.
I am now regretting not waiting for Jack Skellington at the full - Sally was not with him. Not the biggest Nightmare Before Christmas fan, but he is super rare!
Love Donald in his royal get-up!

Craig looks like he took some lessons for how to pose with characters. He like he's (finally) having some fun with that. But bad shirt-typing choice. If there's nothing else I've learned in life, it's that when you have the chance to look like Zack Morris, you take it!
I guess I fall on the "hate it" side of NBC. I remember seeing it as a kid and not liking it. Thank as an adult I saw the NBC overlay the Disneyland does at the Haunted Mansion for the holidays and I was blown away by how incredible the ride was and it made me think that maybe I just didn't remember the movie that well. So I bought it and watched it and- nope, I have no love for it. "What's This?" is def the only part I find interesting.

I'm so excited for The Grand! My first choice was actually Beach Club, but my sis doesn't go to WDW was often as I do so GFlo was her request and I am happy to oblige. I'm just psyched out of my mind we're staying Deluxe! I'm a value person, so this will be the first time at some place so swanky and I can't wait!
Great idea to run some races before running the half! Suggestion: when you get your 10K time, send it to runDisney and ask them to update your corral placement. Is your sis running the 10K too? If you guys get your corral placement updated you get to start the race earlier.

Beach Club or Grand...2 great choices! You will love it so much. The monorail to the race start was really great.

Yeah, besides the race course and at that Frankenweenie even at Downtown Disney a few months ago the only time I have seen them meeting is out in Paris! And by that I mean photos of them meeting...super rare!

I find it really hard to pass up the rare characters. Last year I waited in line for a duck I'd never seen before and had to ask someone who he was afterward (it was Ludwig Von Drake)...Disney brought Sally and Jack out for that event I mentioned above AND the races, so I wonder if they will start showing up more?

Yeah, the kid's a pro now! I'm so proud. I think he had a great time! Except for being in pain from not training...

When I told him he should do the Zack Morris he was like "No, I hate Zack Morris! I hate 'Saved By the Bell!'" A dagger to my heart... How are we even related????

I need to watch NBC again...it's been a couple of years. But my husband hates it so I guess I need to do it when he's not home!

2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! Miles 7-10

Just before the Grand Floridian and Mile Marker 7, we passed a Reedy Creek fire truck.

We didn't stop for much over the next few miles...for whatever reason I had it in my head that I wanted us to finish in under 3 hours, and Craig was starting to struggle. We passed a couple of character meets - Mary and Bert outside of the Grand Floridian and Lilo and Stitch outside of the Polynesian - before finding Mile Marker 8.

We passed the WDW Speedway again (and the Genie) as well as Mile Marker 9.

The photo screen, pirate ship and pirates were still out...

Our third text split was sent out somewhere during this mile...15K in 2:12:33, an average pace of 14:13/mile (hey, getting better! ). Estimated finish time of 3:06:27.

And now we were in double digitland (ate my last Gu chomps here...I think Craig gave up on them because he was sick of getting them stuck in his teeth).

Throughout the race I'd stop to take my mile marker pictures, Craig would walk up ahead, and I would run to catch up with him. Since we'd run this course before, I knew what was coming after Mile Marker 10 - the one overpass of the race we would need to conquer. Craig was really starting to struggle now, so I tried to get him pumped up with a "Lets make this overpass our *****!" He just sort of weakly laughed in response, but together we took off. I felt pretty fantastic at this point - drenched in sweat, sure, but not at all sore or tired. It was great but probably shouldn't have been all that surprising considering that I was in marathon shape and was running a very relaxed pace (and stopping a lot! ).

Almost all of the other runners were walking up the overpass. We weaved around them and tried our best to find the flattest parts of the road (mostly we stayed near the top of the road)...the slope can really do a number on one's knees. Partway through we stopped to show just how strong we were! *flex* Craig claimed he was posing like he was holding a gun, but to me it looks like he's playing air guitar...

And we conquered the overpass, running almost the entire way! Woohoo! We looked down in pity at all of the runners behind/below us before moving on.

2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! Miles 11 & 12

So now we were back on (I think) Epcot Center Drive. The flags from this morning were still out.

Greetings, Mile Marker 11!

This next portion of the course was all highway with sort of rolling hills. Epcot was just beyond our reach.

All of the guys ahead of us...

Phineas and Ferb were out meeting just before Epcot and Mile Marker 12...their line was non-existent but we passed them up.

By now Craig was slowing down a bit more, and as guilty as I felt to do it I sheepishly said, "Umm...see you at the finish?" He said "yep" and I took off for the last 1.1 miles by myself.

Hello, Epcot!

I think these flags are new for the races? Maybe? Or maybe they've been there in the past and I just never noticed...

Lots of awesome CMs out clapping for us here. Stitch was out in Future World with zero wait&so why not?

And just like that&bye-bye Epcot!

2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! The Finish!

Almost to the end...the gospel choir...

...and Mile Marker 13...

...and the finish line!

But anyone who has read my race reports knows that I didn't sprint to the finish. There's pretty much always a character out at this point for high fives and photos...so I had to stop.

MICKEY IN HIS TRACK SUIT! Yes! After last year's marathon I really wanted a picture of Mickey and Minnie in their track suits, so now I was halfway there!

After the picture I think I just turned around and stepped across the finish line. Race #2, complete!

Final finish time: 2:57:56, a 13:34 minute/mile pace...just about 5 minutes better than my time for the 2011 Princess Half Marathon. Booyah!

Time for the bling! Thank you, kind sir!

Close-up shots of the medal I took later...

I headed to to my and my brother's designated meeting area (a lettered tent) in the Family Reunion area. I was surprised to find that he was almost right behind me and had been chasing me down over the last mile. And here's where karma comes back to bite me...you'll notice that he was representing the home teams (Browns, Indians) with his race outfit. Throughout the race we'd gotten a few "HERE WE GO BROWNIES!" cheers, which was really neat. As he crossed the finish line my brother got one final "GO BROWNS!" cheer. He looked to his right and the cheer had come from..."The Price is Right" host and fellow native Clevelander Drew Carey! (He was supposed to run the marathon but had to pull out with a knee injury.) My brother blinked a few times and exclaimed "DREW?!" GUH. If I had been there with my camera we totally would have gotten a picture. This is what I get for ditching Princess C at mile 12. Bad sister!

Anyway, the first thing out of bro's mouth after the Drew story confirmed what I'd known for weeks but didn't really want to admit: "I can't run tomorrow." He'd completed the half marathon on - literally - a handful of training runs, but finishing the marathon (and Goofy) just wasn't possible or smart, especially since he was wiped from completing the half. Sadness, both for him - since he'd paid the Goofy entry fee which is over twice as much as the half fee! - and for me. My second marathon would be a solo endeavor.

2013 Walt Disney World Half Marathon! Final Thoughts

NOTE: This is long...oops!

1. First of all...you'll notice that I didn't mention running into any spectators during this race. From the beginning I made it clear to our fellow travelers that I didn't expect people to try to spectate during the half for a few reasons:
- The biggest reason...running is not a great spectator sport in my opinion. You see your runner for a few seconds and they're gone, just like that. Yawn.
- There aren't many great spectator areas along the half course, so they could have seen us twice, maybe, if they were really diligent.
- From running the Princess Half in 2011 I knew we'd finish right around 9AM...after Will's long day of working and traveling I absolutely did not expect him to get up at the crack of down to wave at me for a minute as I ran past.
- My mom and aunt don't know their way around property very well, so asking them to navigate Disney transportation on race morning just seemed like more of a hassle than it was worth.

2. You'll also notice that I don't have any official race pictures or videos in this report. Last year I bought the marathon package because there were lots of great pictures, including a decent number of me crossing the finish line. This year: lots of finish line pictures from the 5K, no finish line pictures at all from the half or full. NONE. Well, that's not true you can see half of me crossing the half marathon in a couple. There were just a lot less photos overall...I'm not impressed. Just didn't seem worth the money this year.

3. I'm not sure what was going on, but getting people to the starting corrals seemed a little disorganized this year. We were there early and had a long wait before we could start walking to the corrals, yet we only arrived about 15 minutes before the official start of the race. Lots of other people were sprinting to their corrals to start on time. It was weird.

4. I have read before that this race is one of the biggest that Disney puts on (they kept saying 27,000 runners and the results list a little over 21,000 finishers...I wonder how many actually started?), yet I could NOT believe how crowded it was, especially during the couple of miles where we were entering/leaving the Magic Kingdom. It even seemed like the character lines were longer this year than in the past. I don't see them lowering the cap (the number of people that can participate in the race) because it's a proven money-maker and I sure hope they don't increase it. It was almost too much to handle at times and may have even bordered on being unsafe for runners.

5. Along with the crowds (Disney's fault), my other big issue with the race was runner etiquette...or lack thereof. This isn't Disneys fault, of course. They post guidelines in the final race instructions, which is probably all they can do. Like I said earlier, I am NOT complaining about people walking on the race course, but I had problems with people walking in the middle of the course (walk to the side! ), starting to walk in the middle of the course unexpectedly (put up a hand or something! Otherwise I will probably run into you ), and walking 4-5 people abreast and totally blocking the way (Disney suggests no more than 2 abreast ). It was incredibly frustrating.

6. Now, despite my above complaints, I did think that this was a GREAT race overall. Except for the hiccup with the starting corrals and some places where the course could have been lit a little better (Contemporary water bridge, I'm looking at you), I liked it. It was (for the most part) well-organized, there were lots of full-stocked water stops (which also had Powerade), lots of porta-potties, and, as always, AMAZING volunteers. Crowd support was great so fun to run into the Magic Kingdom and toward the finish line while tons of people cheer! And most importantly, we got some great character pictures, the highlight for me being Jack and Sally.

7. Just a random thought...this was my first time running the WDW Half, but second time running on the course as it's the same course as the Princess Half. I was surprised at how much of the course I remembered (course narrows and spreads out over the first 2 miles, overpass after mile 10, look out for sloped roads, etc.) and how much having run it before helped.

I hate to say this because I know this is a goal race for a lot of people...but of the 5 Disney races I've run I think this is the most frustrating race experience I've had, and that is completely because of how crowded it was and the lack of runner etiquette on the course. It really makes me wonder how much bigger this race can get, and makes me hope that the Princess Half (which I know grows each year) won't get as crowded as this race was. I would still, of course, whole-heartedly recommend this race to anyone that wants to participate - we still had a great time despite the above issues - just be aware that it's CROWDED!

Congratulations on finishing your race and meeting your goal of under 3 hours! Fabulous work reporting too. I guess I will need to start training on some of the hills here in Ithaca as I didn't realize the last part of the course isn't as flat as I remember most of WDW property to be.

What do you use to carry your stuff during the race? I don't see a pouch or anything in your pictures unless I'm missing something. Just wondering!

What an awesome race recap! Congrats on beating your time from the Princess!! I really appreciate your honest opinion on the crowds. I've been wanting to do the Donald for a while now, but other Disney races have always taken precedence. I've been debating on the possibilty of trying for this one next year, but I have to be honest and tell you that the crowds worry me a little. I remember how crowded the Princess seemed when I ran it, so I can only imagine how you felt. I know that it definitely had to be frustrating.

So sorry to hear that your brother wasn't going to be able to make the Goofy...but I commend him for even being able to finish the half with such little training!

Yay for the half report!! I have to say you look really amazing in the pictures!!! You can really tell how hard you have worked and I know you said you haven't liked how you looked in past pictures during the races....you look so skinny!!! I just started back on weight watchers so I am working towards being lighter for goofy in 2014!!!

Aww no, your brother can't run the full
But really, no surprise if he wasn't really training. I was still hoping he would. Even if most of it was walking. :P

Sorry your brother wasn't able to do the full with you.

Impressive that he was able to complete the half on so little training and how very cool to have seen Drew!! Sorry you missed out on that (and by extension we missed out on a picture of him )

Thank you! The elevation changes are really not that bad. I didn't do any hillwork when I was training, but my long run route did have a couple of decent-sized hills and I felt like I tackled the water bridge hill, overpass, etc. pretty well. The overpass isn't TOO bad...the elevation increases slowly but the big thing to watch out for there is the slope in the roads. It can kill your knees!

Here's what I was carrying during the race:
- Camera in one hand and iPhone (wrapped in paper towel and sealed in a ziploc baggie) in the other
- In shoe wallet (the black thing on top of my right shoe): $20 cash, Annual Pass, room key card and extra hair tie
- In pockets of my running skirt: Gu chomps (3 bags) and a small packet of tissues in case I came upon a porta-potty with no TP...

I probably could have made better use of the skirt pockets (there's a zip pocket at the waist and one on each leg of the compression shorts underneath the skirt) but if they get too loaded down with stuff I start to feel like the skirt is falling down. For the 2011 Princess Half and the 2012 WDW Marathon I used this Amphipod fuel belt and it did the job. I still had to carry my camera and I didn't take my phone with me - no way it would have fit in the belt - but it held my Gu, room key, etc. Whatever you decide to you make sure you PRACTICE with it ahead of time to make sure it feels right to you!

Ugh, I'm sorry if my description of the crowds makes you nervous. The worst parts were really going down Main Street and coming out of the castle...but hey, at least we were in the Magic Kingdom! Leaving the Magic Kingdom was cramped for a bit too, but otherwise it wasn't awful. it's definitely something to keep in mind but I wouldn't let it keep you from doing the race. Now if they up the cap to something crazy like 35,000 that's a different story...

The bro is nuts when it comes to finishing these races without training... I don't think I could do it!

Thank you so much! Good luck with Weight Watchers! I haven't been great with it lately (stuck at the same number for MONTHS, but that's what happens when you don't try) so I'm hoping now that the races are over and my appetite is back to normal I can get back on the wagon. Weight loss makes running soooo much easier...shocking, right?!

Honestly, I kind of thought he would start the race just because he's stubborn (like me). So if he had to drop out he must have really been hurting!

I know! These silly boys that can get up and go "oh gee, I think I'll run a half marathon today." I roll my eyes, but I'm not-so-secretly jealous. I'm sad to have missed Drew too! I must have ran right past him and not even noticed...or I was distracted by Mickey in his track suit.

Coming out of lurkdom... Great job on hitting your time goal on the half! Thanks for all of the details. I had baby number 3 a few months ago and just started slowly getting back into shape again. I've been thinking about trying to train for one of the Disney half marathons for next year so I'm loving all of this info. Thanks! Can't wait to read how the marathon was!

First of all, great job finishing the half with a better time. I hate your brother would be unable to do the full marathon. I can see how difficult that would be without the proper training. Thank you for your report, and it's nice to see you with such big smiles at the end. It's unfortunate that racer ettiquite was so poor. I had heard some of that on the Mickey Miles podcast and read it on the Princess Posse Facebook group and I'm disappointed. Read the directions, people!

Thank you again for sharing!
