Talking **Another Update...MORE!** New addition to the family! **Update, its a Boy!**

Good grief, this is getting ridiculous. We moved some of the birds around and one of the females died so we had two finches in two cages, not bad, right? Well, the female in one cage was desperate, she was laying eggs in the seed cup! so I caved and put the nest in thinking it would calm her down and I would just take it back out in a week or so. She laid 6 eggs and two weeks ago, FOUR of them hatched!!!

They are impossibly cute and three seem to have a color mutation that is really interesting but enough is enough!

Anybody want some cute finches????

Some of you might remember that I posted last spring about our Zebra finches laying eggs. We had one hatch, but the baby didn't make it. They had a second clutch with the same result. After that I took the nest out and while the girls still laid eggs, none were fertilized.

About 6 weeks ago, one of the females molted terribly and the others were picking on her so I put the nest back in thinking she might have a bit of protection. Well, what really happened was that the alpha female moved right in and laid a clutch. About 3 weeks ago, I realized one of the eggs hatched and braced for another baby to succumb. Instead, it thrived! We have watched it these last weeks turn from an ugly alien to a cute little juvenile. Today, it fledged!!

and with his/her daddy:

We won't know the gender for a bit until its adult feathers come in but it is so cute! And let me tell you, that nest is coming back out! We actually moved the other picked on female to her own cage and will move one more over once we know the gender of this little one.

Update 2/13/2013:
Its a baby boy! His adults feathers are starting to come in and you can just see the orange patches on his cheeks. His daddy is teaching him their song and it is cute when he tries to copy. Since his daddy's name is Coffee we named him Espresso, get it? a little coffee?

Thanks! DD was so excited, I had to drag her to the van to go to school. She offered her allowance, emptying the dishwasher and taking the dogs out without complaining if I let her stay home...I was tempted!

How cute. Is this the first time you had a baby survive?

Yes, we had two eggs hatch in separate clutches and neither survived more than a day so this is VERY exciting! However, I have no intention of being a finch farmer so the nest is coming out as soon as I know the baby is ready!

I had zebra finches as a kid. Always a pair...one boy and one girl. They didn't have a nest in the cage and occasionally laid eggs on the ground that didn't do anything. I was at a funeral a few weeks ago and they had a lovely large bird cage display (wooden and glass) with 2 zebra finches in it. It was very nice to see them and remind me of my little birdies I once had. Thanks for posting this pic...he/she is so cute!

we had a male and female cockatiel and they had a few near misses and then one day we had a clutch that survived...but I did the bonding and feeding of the babies...it was like having real babies in the house...fed every three hours...I LOVED IT..
IS this the amount of eggs they lay in a clutch...we had five and one got trampled ..just wondering?

I think each species has a number they lay. Coffee and Sugar had five eggs but only Espresso hatched. Once he fledged I tossed out the other eggs and took the nest out, I do not want a Finch Farm!
