Shellfish Allergy

Hi all,
My DS was diagnosed with a shellfish allergy recently. While it is certainly not the worst by any means, we are trying to navigate through it. He has to carry an EPIPEN in case of ingestion and can develop hives if he is too close to crab (definitely a little weird). Anyhow, do you have any suggestions? I plan to mention it when I make ADR's and will repeat once we arrive at a restuarant to make sure that there is no cross contamination of grease, etc. Obviously, we will be careful in our selection of restaurants as well. But just wondering if anyone on here had any feedback. Thanks!

Hi there!! Sorry to hear your son has an allergy....they are never fun...especially for kids. Anyhow, my DH has an allergy to shellfish (crustaceans to be exact). Super allergic to crab, shrimp, lobster, etc. Same thing happens to him if he's too close...hives!

We've been to WDW many times and the chefs have always been great. Definitely make note of the allergy when making your ressies. And then when you check in for your ressie, make mention of it again. And mention it a 3rd time to the server. They are always right on top of things. The chef will come to your table and advise you what your son can and can't eat. If necessary, they will make him a meal in the kitchen in an area away from all shellfish.

We've been going to WDW for close to 15 years and have luckily never had an allergy issue. If you take the same precautions as you would at home your DS will be A-OK!!

Have fun!!!!!

Is the problem with being near crab due to flying debree when cracking it? If yes then restaurants that have dishes with shellfish in them should be safe. The chefs will do a great job of ensuring his safety. Just look through menus and avoid ones that serve crab legs.

I'd avoid Cape May Cafe since they have crab legs on the buffet. Heck, I could smell the crab just walking into the area around it (when we entered the doors around the far side heading from YC, not from the BC side).

Personally, I prefer to stick with Disney owned restaurants with food allergies.

Avoid Cape May dinner, because of the crab legs.

I'd also suggest that you ask for your own table at Teppan Edo if you go. You're seated with other parties and they might want to order seafood. You may be able to arrange this through Special Diets, I don't know. Had a post from someone awhile back whose tablemates told them they couldn't order seafood, when they'd gone there for the shrimp and scallops. Some sushi contains crab, you'd probably be okay at the places where they substitute white fish for the crab, but any upscale place serving sushi will use real crab in California rolls.

It's not just upscale places that use real crab in california rolls. I wouldn't call Kona Island Sushi Bar upscale, but they use real crab. The immitation (which is mostly whitefish) contains gluten so we can't eat it but the stuff they make there uses real crab.

Kona's more upscale than grab and go or counter service sushi which probably uses the imitation crab. I'd expect real crab there.

Most regular restaurants in my area use immitation so I guess I was expecting that from regular restaurants at WDW as well. I was thrilled when a chef told me that they use the real stuff. Definitely at the grab and go you'll find immitation.
