How to get Pickle Smell out of the Pickle Jar

I buy Vlasic "Farmer's Garden" pickles, and the jar is similar to a canning jar.

I'd like to reuse them (not for canning, of course) but how do I get the pickle smell out of them. Just washing them in hot soapy water doesn't do it.

Would hot water with baking soda work? Any other suggestions?

I don't know, but why not try it?

Fill it with water and some lemon juice for a while.

Try the dishwasher.
Baking soda or lemon juice might also work.

I say fill it up with a few tblspoons of vinegar, a few drops of dish soap, and the rest water and let sit for a while. Then put in dishwasher.

I'll try them and see.

Can't use the dishwasher though. Last time I used it I went back to the kitchen later and had a LAKE on the floor, I kid you not! It was not fun to clean up. We'll be getting a new one after vacation.

We sometimes get the 5 gallon pickle buckets from Firehouse Subs (they sell them for 2 bucks) and they smell terrible! I fill it with a bunch of crumpled up sheets of newspaper, put the lid on and let it sit for several days. It doesn't take the smell completely away but it helps a lot. If the jars are glass it should work better, the buckets are plastic and smells seem to linger longer.
