Slower week before or after Marathon?

We are going down for the marathon weekend next year, 2014. We want to stay on an extra week. So my question is, is it slower the week before or after the marathon? I thought maybe people coming back in the next few days would know the answer! Thanks all.

We've done it both ways- a 10 day trip starting New Years day ending with the marathon, and the Friday of the race expo with 7 days of park touring after the races.

In my experience and opinions, it's better to stay the week AFTER the marathon. Is it just your DH running? You don't want to have to put in taper runs AND tour the parks the week before the race.

The week after makes for a VERY nice race recovery Plus, you can show off your bling all week and get congratulations from passersby!

The week before usually has the tail-end of the New Years crowds, and most colleges are still on winter break. The upside is that you will still get a glimpse of the Christmas decoration as it comes down over the week.

The downside to going the week after is that it normally abuts MLK weekend, so crowds will pick up at the end. But overall we found the crowds to be lower the week after the race.

Either way there will be BTGs present.
14 Trips total including POFQ, ASMU, CBR, AKL, WL, POP, and a trip to Disneyland!

Upcoming trip- WDW Trip #14. BCV. 6/13.

Thinking about buying pins from ebay and getting into pin trading? PLEASE READ THIS FIRST!

We went the week AFTER in 2010 and it was WONDERFUL!!! It was cold (snowing when we got there the Fri of Marathon weekend) but got warmer each day as the week went on. Crowds were non-existant. We literally walked onto every ride. On Fri of the week (5 days after the marathon) we waited in 20 min lines for headliners like Big Thunder Mountain.

I think that the week before might always be iffy, as crowds are still dying down from the Christmas and New Year rush.

Oh, and we got to see WDW all Christmas-ed up, and got to see the heavy equipment as they took the lights off the castle, and then saw WDW all normal again. It was kinda cool, especially for our first trip (and I work in the construction/design industry, so seeing the equipment and transformation was awesome for me, personally).

Feb 2012 - Wilderness Lodge. Terrific escape from the SuperBowl!

We just returned from 6 days in WDW the week leading up to Marathon and I thought it still seemed quite busy. DHS on Saturday 1/5 was insane 3+ hour wait for TSM and no fp available. We didn't get to ride it this trip bummer
