Question Reduced deposit cancellation question

We booked our cruise on board and paid 10% deposit. If a deal came out after the PIF date would the penalty be 10% or the full 20% usual deposit.

I could probably stomach 10%.

On the DCL website it states for our June 1st med cruise 89-45 days before you would lose your deposit which I guess for us should be 10%.

Hope this makes sense and thanks for your thoughts.

It makes sense. The penalty would be the full regular 20% deposit amount.

I would think it's the 10%. After all, that's the amount that held your reservation all that time. I would double check with DCL or your TA before doing anything that can't be undone.

We had to cancel the 2010 WBTA and had an OBB. I asked about this and was told 20%, so we cancelled prior to the penalty phase. Others have reported here that they have paid the 20% penalty when cancelling an existing booking to book a KSF or other deal -- and still saved money so made the switch.

I just realised that the PIF date for the med cruise is 120 days out and the cancellation fees start at the 89 day point.

Therefore I presume that if an offer comes out between these dates then you can move without penalty.

Has anyone else had any experience of this.

Thanks

Has anyone actually cancelled a cruise booked on-board during the penalty period where the penalty is the loss of deposit and can confirm if it was 10% or 20%? The way it's written, it seems clear that it's the loss of the deposit paid. In this case, it's 10%. If they meant the penalty is loss of 20% of cruise price, it seems they would have said that!

I don't doubt that many people have been told when they called and asked that the penalty would be 20% as that is the standard deposit and it's possible that many of the phone reps haven't ever encountered a reservation with a deposit other than 20%. And all or most of here know that Disney is notorious for giving out wrong information when you call and speak to someone!

I have second-hand knowledge that someone who booked on-board for a future cruise the same cruise as me for same room category, and when VGT rates came out they re-booked and canceled their original cruise, and the amount they saved was exactly what I'd calculated it would be with the penalty of losing the 10% deposit. So, I really believe the penalty is 10% in the case being discussed, but I can't prove it from personal experience.

In this specific case, the cruise was $389 less after taking into account the deposit loss, but when accounting for losing the $200 OBC for booking on-board, it was really just $189 which wasn't enough for me to go with an un-assigned VGT cabin compared to the one I'd specifically selected. So for people considering cancelling an on-board booking, remember to factor in the lost OBC when comparing prices.
