Bear watching advice from previous Alaskan cruisers

Hi, we're cruising Alaska this summer and wish to do a bear viewing tour on our Ketchikan day which will be August 10th.

I'd be very grateful if any previous Alaskan cruisers could share their experiences from this port.

Me too! Very curious Bout the avail of the bear excursions for castaway club members. Do they sell out quickly?

In 2011 I did not do a bear excursion. We did the Saxman Village excursion but upon leaving we were all excited when a bear showed up just down the street!! The bus driver pulled over and we were able to get pictures!! Guess he heard we were in town!!

We did the Bear Country and Wildlife Expedition in Ketchikan on our cruise last September (2012). We were the last cruise of the season. We saw 7 different bears (including some cubs) feeding in the stream from the elevated platforms. It was awesome! We also really enjoyed feeding the reindeer. I know other posters have seen bears on other excursions, but this was the only time we saw bears the whole cruise. I'm really glad we did this excursion!

Our cruise was only about half full, so I can't really comment to if they fill up fast or not.

We didn't take an excursion to see bears, but see bears we did. They showed up in all three ports.

One was walking along side of the mountain in Skagway, bears were fishing for Salmon at Mendenhall Glacier and in Ketchikan, we took a city tour with outside vendor for cheap cheap to waste time while our kids zip lined and our guide brought us right to a mama bear and two cubs were playing and hanging out near water. He pointed to the group across the way and said "they are on a bear viewing excursion and we are seeing the same bears."

Good luck at whatever you decide. I'd be interested to know if a bear watching excursion guarantees bear sighting?

We went on the last cruise of the season in 2011.. We took the Neets Bay excursion and loved it! We also saw 7 different bears, but from the ground. One of them walked right in front of us and hung out about 8 to 10 ft away.

Have an awesome cruise!

We saw bears along the side of the road when we took the city bus to Totem Bite State Park in Ketchikan. Cost for excursion $2 per person. Bus is $1 each way. Park admission free. Volunteer guides didn't accept tips. Self guided info free in visitor center at park.

Cost of this excursion thru cruise line--$69. Private bus instead of city bus (OH MY, we had to walk across the street and half a block down...blue line bus runs every 20 minutes. Best instruction was "If you get to that bridge, you've gone too far.) Cruise line people got a cup of cocoa in the gift shop. Costly cocoa.

Another hint--the bus runs past a Wal-mart. We got off there on the way back to ship (DD forgot a few necessities of life), and took the free wal-mart shuttle back to the port.

We also saw bears, including a mother with 2 cubs, at Mendenhall Glacier visitor center in Juneau.

We saw about 25 bears at menenhall Glacier. There is a salmon stream with an elavated walkway to watch them.

We were by menenhall Lake and a bear walked within 15 feet of us. It just came out of the woods.

Were you able to book early due to cruise status or was this available when general booking opened?

My advice is to always have a least one person in your group that you can beat in a foot race.

We saw bears just strolling along at Mendenhall as well (time of year would have been just before Labor Day weekend). What was almost as interesting was the people running to get right up to the bears to take pictures. We were sort of expecting to see a mauling at that point, but nope, the bears refrained.

It's interesting to see how different instincts are in people; our instinct was to stop walking and start moving backwards when we saw them (they were walking away from us), and to view from afar, but that's definitely not everyone's first thought, that's for sure!

Thanks for all your help. We've decided to book an excursion by plane - that way if we don't see any bears at least we'll have enjoyed the flight as it will be our first (and probably only) time in a seaplane.
