I've had both. I've been outsmarted by both. However, I give the edge to cats.

Cat Beats Professional Wealth Managers at Picking Stocks

“While the professionals used their decades of investment knowledge and traditional stock-picking methods, the cat selected stocks by throwing his favourite toy mouse on a grid of numbers allocated to different companies.”

Great timing...this was on Letterman the other night:

Top Ten Signs Your Cat Is Up to No Good

Friday, January 11, 2013

10. He rubs up against your leg — suddenly, your wallet’s gone
9. Coughs up fur ball, then a balloon of cocaine
8. For a cat, he rents a lot of storage units
7. Your dog goes missing, ransom note demands tuna
6. Kathryn Bigelow’s next film is about the hunt for your cat
5. Brings home mice, chipmunks, and the occasional Petco truck
4. Clawed a gang sign into his scratching post
3. Endless, profanity-laced meowing
2. Used to lick himself, now pays a neighbor cat to do it for him
1. Hired dog to be his ‘getaway driver’

I've had a lifetime of smart cats, so up until 12 years ago, I'd have readily answered "Cats!"

Then I adopted Sophie. She's sweet-tempered, loving, adorable and just a really nice cat. But not smart. At all. She's a Russian Blue and we make excuses for her that she simply doesn't speak English and we don't speak Russian. But, really - not smart. We tell her she's cute a lot.

OTOH, my 19yo Bailey-Cat is the smartest cat for whom I've ever slaved. She has our entire household do her bidding, including my 10yo DS who's been trained to understand the subtleties in Bailey's cries to assess whether she's in need of petting, play, wet food, dry food, catnip-flavored treats, free range chicken-flavored treats, a fresh pan or a blind opened so as to enjoy a sun patch. Bailey is utterly unmotivated to do anything that doesn't immediately improve her quality of life, won't be held, doesn't snuggle and hisses at strangers. But she's darned-smart. We're pretty sure she's using our Kindle Fires at night to write a screenplay.

One of my cats escaped yesterday and was outside in the cold for about two hours. Every time the cat gets out I find him outside scared to death. He was really freaked out last night when we came up to the back door and wanted in. Yet today the dumb cat tried to run outside again...because apparently he forgets how scared he is once he gets out there.
