cold enough that a wet suit is a valid option. We just got back from 12/8 western fantasy and my kids went in but it was quite chilly...and we are used to the Jersey Shore : )

We were there the other day and I thought it was great. Refreshing. Little chilly at first then great. Kids didn't say a word about it being too cold.

Cool

I didn't know it got that cold! I'm from CA and the water is ALWAYS cold, so Castaway Cay was awesome for us. Well, we went in July It was like bath water...walked right in with no hesitation! Is it because I'm used to freezing water here?

We were there for the fantasy NYE cruise and it takes a few minutes to warm up to it but once you get in its not too bad the air temp was about 80 so it was a great day anyways

We've already got our springsuits (shorty wetsuits) that we'll be bringing. We'll be there on the 21st. Hubby has been watching water temps in the area...he's reported to me a range with a low of maybe 73F, yesterday or the day before at 78F.

We went in December just before Christmas and it was just like that as well. A little cool at first but once in it, it was great.

Most everyone here on the boards make it out to be like it's like arctic water or something. But it's not bad at all.

Depends on where you are from and what you consider cold.

I don't know how they even figure out what the average water temperature is because when you snorkel, there are very definite areas of warmer or cooler streams of water.

In general in January, we find Castaway to be a bit cool when you first get in, but quickly gets comfortable. The real variable is the air temp...which can be 50 or 80. But what can I say....it was 66 here today and is supposed to snow tomorrow.

I agree, air temperature is more of an issue. Water is never going to be colder than about 73, which, in my opinion, is plenty warm to swim, but if the air temp is 73, you can get chilly getting out.

Wink Christmas Temp

Hi there,

We were on CC during the double dip Dream Christmas cruise and both days were lovely and sunny in the high 70's, we come from a cold wet country and we found the water to be a nice temp and better than we remembered from a previous Christmas cruise.

Ill be there this week so this was interesting to me and def something I was wondering about. I like to walk along the beach just barely in the water or at the most little bit over my knees. I can't swim. Never learned due to a childhood incident where one of my cousins held me under the water for a long time so if water gets up to my neck I start panicking but I still like to get in the water and enjoy the beach.

We've been to CC in December, July, and June. We'll be going in March this year.

In December 2010, it was WAAAAAY too cold! But I think the problem was more the air temp. When we left FL, it was 32 degrees. So on CC, it was a balmy 60. But definitely not warm enough to swim. Even the sand was cold on our feet. Very few people got in the water. My middle daughter went down the Pelican Plunge once and then refused to get back in the water. I don't think anyone snorkeled. Most adults were wrapped up in beach towels on the loungers. It was still beautiful, but not warm at all.

We are really hoping that in March, it will be almost like June...

I'm a native Floridian and used to upper 70's and low 80's for water temps. When I was a CC last January, the air temperature was great but the water was glacier. I couldn't go past my ankles. But if you're from further north (which it would have appeared many on my sailing were), you might not think it's "that bad". I forced myself to snorkel and never got used to it; the bronchitis I had before the trip returned quickly after that.

So you're going to get mostly "it's not that bad" from northerners and freezing from southerners!
