Spaceship Earth: Past, present, future

Over the years, Spaceship Earth has gone through revisions and narrators. Jeremy Irons is the one I remember most and loved. I hear the newest narrator, Judi Dench, isn't quite as good. But what do you think?

How will you always remember Spaceship Earth?

The Dench version has been dumbed down.. like taken down several grade levels in complexity of the sentence structure of the narration and word choice.

It's sort of sad really.

I had heard that Like she isn't adding to the story as much as she is explaining what is there.

I'd also say the opposite is the new Test Track - it's a vastly more intelligent experience than the original and yet you can find on these forums and others endless complaints of people being confused about what was going on during the ride.

It's present in a very abstract manner.. but it's all there and explained.. people just aren't getting it. And, well, I don't blame the designers since the information is there.. it's just clearly going over people's heads.

The average American has a 6th grade reading level so I guess they have to find a happy medium.

On that note, the "Dobkin" version (which i still dont believe is Dobkin after hearing it) was painfully stale and boring. Like listening to a text book that's too wordy and trying, but failing, to be poetic.

I voted the Jeremy version, as that's the one I grew up with. I don't mind the Judy version either, but I think the Jeremy one is more sentimental.

I agree..the current version...is "ok" but it is way dumbed down for those who have absolutely zero knowledge of history or science...so to speak.
Cronkite, for me..was the best.

I prefer Judy Dench, just cause I love her. I was lucky enough to have heard all 4, although I was just a little kid in the early 80s. We ride that thing so much though (maybe 15 times a trip times how many trips since the update) I dont even remember some of the scenes. Dh and I were talking about the downward part on our last trip and we can remember the teacher for example, but we cant remember all of the missing scenes.

What bothers me now is the lack of fire small in Alexandria. Kinda sad. Hope they fix it.

The only one I've seen is Judi Dench which I like a lot--but it sounds like I would have loved the earlier versions! Hopefully it won't get dumbed down any more!

So sorry that I can't vote in the poll. I'll have to find versions of the older soundtracks so I can find out what's gone.
