Tamiflu stock on the ship?
I am aware that there is a Dr. and clinic on board, however, I am wondering if they have prescriptions on board as well. We are leaving for an 8 night Bahamian on Thursday and my DH and I are a little worried about the current status of this flu season. If someone comes on board with the flu, and there is a widespread outbreak, what happens? Also, does anyone have any suggestions of some over the counter things we should take with us, just in case? We will have our 4 year old son with us. Thank You!

They have drugs on board. There is no need for prescriptions as the drugs are dispensed directly by the medical center.
There is a reasonable assortment of antibiotics, pain relievers, decongestants, etc. Over the counter drugs are sold in the gift shops as well. As to whether the ship stocks any specific drug or whether they will have some left if a member of your family needs it, I can only tell you what WE got when needed. They do carry a limited supply on board, but they are reasonably equipped to function as the source of medical care for guests and crew. The ship is prepared to offer supportive care. If someone is seriously ill, they will be evacuated to a hospital, either on one of the islands or back in the US. |

Not sure if you are asking about Tamiflu specifically but it is really only clinically indicated in certain populations of people. If you are over 2 years old and relatively healthy there isn't really a need for it. Also the medical center on all of the ships are well equipped, more so than some small hospitals. As for OTC medications, bring what ever you would like for symptomatic treatment, the selection of OTC cold medications on the ship is small, so if you have a brand you like, such as coricidin, tylenol, advil, etc, then bring it with you.

We came down with the flu while on our 2009 cruise and we were all given Tamiflu. A couple of trips to see the doc (for our 3 year old DD) and Tamiflu for four days for the 3 of us cost $400!

My DD went to the medical center and had an IV inserted and a liter of fluids. Total bill was $1006.12
She was only there for about an hour.

My DS had the flu a couple of years ago and when we took him to the doctor the doctor did the same thing - gave us all tamiflu. I would like to get a family dose before we leave!!

Glad to hear they have it on board. My ODS has asthma, plus an anaphylactic egg allergy, which means no flu shot for him. He needs Tamiflu if he gets the flu. The rest of us could tough it out, but it's too risky for him with the asthma. --Katie

We have all been vaccinated, but I had my Dr give me a Tamiflu script to take with me just in case. I have read that the flu vaccine this year is a good match for what's going around, but still only 70% effective against B strains and 50-55% against the more severe A strains.
