Cell phone use on Alaska cruises

What is anyone's experience with using cell phones while cruising in Alaska? Were you able to get signal while cruising? Or I the ports of call?

No problem in the ports of call. At least in town. Didn't try on the ship.

If you do it on the ship, it is cellular at sea for $2.49 per minute. In US ports, we had no problem with Verizon and no fees. We did confirm this with them in advance.

We have Verizon, and we had no service while at sea, and spotty service in Skagway and Juneau and none in Ketchikan. In the ports where we had none, some times it would say "roaming" so we made sure to keep them on airplane mode when not in use, so it didn't try to update etc..

Im with a Canadian carrier but had NO issues my cell phone in all our ports, and even at sea when we were somewhat close to land (if that makes sense). Usually had service when going from one port to another. And I was only charged the American fee when using data. I had a plan for US travel. I had no charges for 'cellular at sea'.

Hoping you get great reception!!!

We have Verizon and used Mifi in all three ports last year with our iTouches to check-in while in town, and on the ship with the laptop while in port. The ship has to turn off the ship at sea service while in port due to complaints filed because some people who live in the ports were being charged for that service when the ships were docked there. We did not have any problems in any of the ports.

We have AT&T and used our phone in every port (you are in the US, after all). When at sea, the signal jumped over to Cellular at Sea's connection so we never used it.

LOL, funny side-story. We were in Ketchikan on my birthday. My in-laws told my husband to have me call them when we were in port so they could wish me Happy Birthday and inform me of my onboard gift from them. DH forgot until we got back on the ship. The ship was still pulling away from the dock, but the gangway had been disconnected. The big door was still open, but guests were not allowed right up to it. I stood in a little spot right near where they scan you on and off the ship as we were pulling away, chatting with my in-laws, on AT&T all the while. We were not sure when it would switch over to CAS, haha, so the SECOND the big ship door shut, DH started telling me, "Hang up. Hang up, now. Hang up." HAHAHA! It can go from free to expensive very quickly!

Uh-oh! What did we do?!?! OMG, we did it!

We've called home (Verizon) from Ketchikan, Juneau, and Anchorage. No extra charges.

Thank you everyone for the feedback! I did know we are in the U.S. at port, but was wondering with the mountains how spotty the signal would be.

No problem in the ports (AT&T). Don't try it on the ship while it is sailing unless you want to pay the big bucks.
