Rubbish. They were the only undefeated team in the country, with impressive wins against Stanford, Oklahoma, and USC. Until Oregon and K. State lost, ND was on the outside looking in so clearly the media had no impact on their going to the title game. They clearly deserved to be in the game but were just dominated by a semi-pro NFL team. No shame in losing to that Alabama team.

These arguments will continue until BCS can come up with an actual conference system that makes sense, similar to the NFL. Although there are WAY too many teams, so it's really rather hard to figure out how that would be done.

Aren't they moving towards a "playoff-type" system? I thought I saw on the ticker on ESPN last night something about the Rose Bowl and Cotton or Sugar Bowl being a "semi-final" next season.

They are going to a 4-team playoff. I guess it starts next year, but I'm not positive. However, I don't know that a playoff system would have prevented what happened last night. If it would have been implemented this year, ND(#1) plays Oregon(#4), Bama(#2) plays Florida(#3), and the winners would meet.

I'm talking about a true conference system, where there is no voting. I can't even begin to understand the concept of voting on best teams. It should be based on stats, and that means conferences, ala the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.

Likely the championship would have been Oregon & Bama so I think it would have fixed it to some degree.

ND had one impressive win... Stanford.

The top SEC, Big12, Pac12 have 2-3 impressive wins JUST to get to their conference championship.

That would be interesting to see with 120(?) teams in FBS. That's the problem. You can't just look at stats because there's too many teams. Someone going undefeated in the Sunbelt is no way the same as someone going undefeated in the SEC (for example).

I've said for years they should do a 16 team playoff (like what they've done for decades in FCS). That's 15 "bowls" right there. The other 17(?) bowls can have their pick of whoever doesn't make the playoffs.

Instead of making the Championship game in early January, why not move it until the week before the SuperBowl? There's no football that weekend anyway so make it a big game Sunday night? That would also allow more lead time for more playoff games.

And yes, ND was overrated. Alabama is an incredibly good team but they did have a loss & played some teams closer than they played ND last night.

Exactly.
Notre Dame was absolutely man-handled in the game last night. (Literally, at one point, when one of Alabama's defense pretty much picked up and threw one of ND's guys who tried to tackle him.) Alabama really did live up to its hype.

But to say ND was only there because of some media bias, is just bizarre. They were the only undefeated bowl-eligible team in the country. If any other team had been undefeated, they would have been there instead. ND didn't play a single 1-AA team (unlike most of the SEC). They played and beat 10 teams from the BCS conferences, including the eventual PAC-10 champions and the eventual Big 12 #1 team. 4 of the teams they played ended the season in the top 25. The two non-BCS teams they played were Navy and BYU - not powerhouses, but also not patsies.
Alabama also played a tough schedule - no question! But to say that ND played a weak schedule or that being in a conference somehow makes it harder is just inaccurate and confusing.

I would think Alabama fans would want to talk about how great of a season ND had, so that their win is even more impressive. What's better, to win by beating an awesome, undefeated team who beat several other top 25 teams, or to win by beating an hyped-up 'little sisters of the poor' team?

Alabama is an amazing team. I suspect the announcer was right when he said Alabama would beat ND 20 out of 20 times. The fact that ND did have a great year and did deserve to be there makes Alabama's game even more impressive.

Go Irish!

You realize that ND beat the Pac12 champ (Stanford) and the Big 12 champ (OK), right?
