Absolutely no difference between Bahamas or Mexico - if you want to return to the US by air, you need a passport; if on a closed loop tour by sea to either country, you can return with a birth certificate and ID. With Mexico there is at least the possibility of driving and returning to the US by land, but it's rather unlikely.

Enough...OP got many responses, some good advice for future situations and her response back from DCL so before this goes downhill further I am going to close it.
