Here is how to get from Heathrow to Victoria Station.

http://www.heathrow-airport-guide.co.uk/london.html

One confusing thing was they do not post the track until a few minutes ahead of time so not a lot of time to get to it.

We stayed at the Premier Inn and it was clean and a reasonable price, but I don't think it had AC, but it was not hot when we were there.
Terrific information. Thank you so much, and thanks to Ladyshopper.

i saw that about the no AC and it concerned me, but we are going in September. What month did you go in 2010?

We got a rental car in London and drove down ourselves....stopping at Leeds Castle on the way down. We turned in the car in Dover. After the cruise we got another car in Dover, drove to Dover castle then to Canterbury Cathedral on the way back to Heathrow. Driving on the 'wrong' side of the road is not nearly as bad as it sounds....you are just going with the flow of traffic and it seems quite normal.

We were there the end of July.

This is a picture from in front of the hotel.

Ahhhh, now you've hit upon a whole other set of questions I have: do you need special insurance to drive over there? Where did you rent the car and how (credit card)? And do they have automatics?

When I think of driving over there, all I keep seeing are the scenes from National Lampoon's European Vacation

We actaully stayed in London 2 nights before the cruise. We picked up the car from National Car rental about a 1 from our hotel in downtown London. We dropped it off at National in Dover and they had a shuttle to take us to the ship. Afterwards, I took a taxi from the ship to National (about 2 miles from ship) and drove back to pick up the family. We turned it in at the airport much they same way things work in the US.

Yes, we rented it with a credit card just like we do in the US. They do have automatics available but they are a little bit more expensive. My auto insurance (USAA) covers me when I get a rental car. If not, I think you can also pay a few bucks more at the car rental place to get the insurance.

It was bit hairy driving in London as we had a standard shift and I'm not very good driving a stick. My wife was navigating via a GPS (that we got from National with the car for like $10) and would tell me where to turn....although it was oftern "You were supposed to turn at that street we just past!" LOL

It took a little getting used to sitting on the right side of the car as I kept glacing up and to the right to see my rearview mirrow...which, of course is on my left. Really, I just followed the car in front of me thru town and on the highway so there is little chance I'd 'forget' and drive on the wrong side of the road.

The bottom line is, it sounds like it would be difficult but it is not. It was a great adventure!

Encouraging. Thank you.

Do you mind if I ask how much the rental costs were?
