What size is your computer screen and are you happy with it?

I'm thinking of buying my 60+ year old parents a laptop for Christmas. They currently don't have a computer at all. I'm looking at screen size -- 14", 15.6", 17". Not sure what is best for my folks.

What do you use and are you happy with it?

I think my parents will primarily use it for email, perhaps reading the newspaper and I'll bet my dad will take it to his La-Z-Boy to watch old movies.

I recommend going as large on the screen as you can if they will not be carrying it around daily to different places outside of the house. It sounds like they will mostly (if not always) keep it at home.

Since you anticipate they will do a lot of reading of text and watching movies on it instead of a TV, the larger screen size will be a huge bonus. I use a 22" desktop screen and I can't imagine only having a 15" or smaller. Since they won't be playing graphic-intensive games or anything like that on it you won't have to spend extra money on fancy bells and whistles (as long as it is good enough to watch the movies for your dad!) and get a large screen.

What a great gift for them!

Mine is 13" and I love it. Nice and lightweight, easy to transport. And this screen is plenty big for me.

DH's is 17" and it is VERY heavy and cumbersome to lug around. Great to watch movies on, though (as long as it's sitting on something other than legs).

I have an iMac and thought for a while about the 27" screen vs. the 21" screen. I think if they still made the 24" that would have been more of a competition but the 27" was a no-brainer for me. I LOVE it.

I do have a 15" laptop too, but for a desktop I want larger.

I have a 17" laptop that weighs almost nothing and I love it.

Laptop is 17", desktop is 23", TV is 72". I definitely fall on the "bigger is better" side.

Why do you think your dad would want to sit in the living room (?) and watch movies on a computer screen? when you could save yourself some money and buy them a desktop with a nice sized screen, and maybe buy them a dvd player..

I had a 17" laptop, and it was too heavy and large....didn't like it at all. I now have a 13" Macbook Pro. Love it! Lightweight, and the 13" screen is a good size for me. I have a muscle disorder, so the 'lightweight' was an important factor when replacing my old laptop.

My DH loves larger computer screens...his desktop is a 22". But his laptop is 13", and he's fine with that. I mean, the laptop sits so close to your face that even a 13" seems large!

We have the 15" MacBook Pro and the 27" Mac. I am happy with both. I didn't want to get the 17" because it wouldn't fit into my bag that I used for teaching! The 15" was a perfect size for the web, watching movies, and grading homework!

I'm on my 2nd 17 inch laptop--and I love it. DH hates mine, and thinks it's too big--but it's what I like. It's a little heavier than other laptops, but I tend to zoom everything so I don't have to wear my glasses all the time. This allows everything to still fit on the screen. I also like the full number pad.

I used to have a 17" laptop. The screen size was great... until it was time to move the laptop somewhere. The weight was a pain.

I'd suggest a 14"-15" laptop, and maybe a "dock" where they can hook it up to a larger monitor... maybe even their TV?
