Hey wait-- check this out--

Even though the MM cartoons were kind of lacking in story and character strength, with the push of a very creative person behind them (or company), MM has become a cultural phenomenon.

Does this sound familiar?

And even though the BB cartoons are the favorites of many, have many people who can quote them ad nauseum (sp?) , and almost everyone knows all the supporting characters, their theme park presence is virtually unknown. (six flags?)

I guess we can conclude that even an IP that people feel has a poor story line and character development can, with the right marketing and execution, become a cultural icon. Thanks for spiking that insight, LOL.

And somehow, amazingly, we are back on topic.

To add-- when the mm cartoons started, they were popular because of the technology being ahead of the proverbial pack-- another coincidence?

Man, you guys are writing this for me.

Valid points...but I'm not sure a 3D movie in 2009 can be put up to the same measuring stick to cartoons in 1928...completely different environment.

And it wasn't walt and. Mickey Mouse...
It was Mickey Mouse, the depression, Snow White, WW II, the baby boom, the Cold War, Disney land, post industrialization, and even the gipper/Eisner/boom of the bubba Clinton era...

Tad of things going on with more significance than these most frivolous of times...don't you think?
Am I saying that the 20th century was way more important than anything we are doing today and so are the things that symbolize it?
Well maybe... But that would be social commentary.

Definitely different times.

I guess at least Avatar has the economic downturn of the last few years going for it-- If only we were having a war that somewhat divided our country at the same time...

Now I am out of my comfort zone--- please take this with the humor it was intended.

IMHO Star Wars is the only real answer to Harry Potter World.

Probably the same old... How
Can Disney gets some of the thunder from across town back? Do they care or need to? And will blue stick figure characters and names nobody remembers make a dent?

Agreed. And Potter isn't even in the same league of long lasting cultural icon that is Star Wars. Such franchises are rare, albeit very valuable and a big draw, however, many other rides, environments, and tie-ins can be very successful without such franchises. That is the point. Avatar is not Star Wars or Harry Potter (Who knows what the future brings, though.) but it doesn't need to be. It only needs to be the source of good identifiable and unique items for a fantasy nature based land & rides. It is that in spades and more than any other property that exists at this time.

~Avatarland looks like it's going to be amazing! It does. There is a lot of money and talent dedicated to this project. I expect to be wowed by all of it! Very exciting stuff. Disney Imagineers working together with James Cameron and his team makes for endless possibilities -- this is a creative powerhouse. I know they're going to create some fabulous stuff!

^^^~This, plus the night time safari, the new night time show, and just being able to enjoy Animal Kingdom at night is going to be fabulous! It is. And, I can't wait!!!

Woah! That looks like a whole new technology that would improve on Soarin'! Fascinating! Looks simpler than Soarin' but it may also be able to do more.
