Buying alcohol in port??

Can you buy alcohol in port and bring it back to the ship either to consume on board or to bring home to the states?

Yes, you can bring onboard any beverages (just like embarkation day).

The exception is Grand Cayman. You can't do it there.

Thanks! I was thinking it was GC but wasn't sure.

Rum

Being we are in the Caribbean and the Caribbean is where rum is made, is it inexpensive or is everything expensive for the tourists with open wallets?

When we sailed to Nassau, we found the prices for rum in port and on the ship to be comparable. Since we were buying it as gifts and are not drinkers, I can't say how they compare to prices at home besides the fact there is no tax.

We bought alchohol in GC in December. - There are two stores near the tender dock. One will sell alchohol and the other won't. We asked at the one across from Margaritaville and they directed us down the street to the shop at the corner by stoplight that does. The front is on the main street and the back door puts you right where the tender area is.

Okay so if you buy in port to bring home, do you pack it in your checked bags? What do you have to declare?

In Grand Cayman alcohol is subject to a heavy import duty and is quite expensive compared to other islands... if you are buying to drink on the island.

However there is a healthy trade in duty free booze at much better tax-free prices. You need to place your order at least an hour or two before the last tender departs to your ship. Your order will be delivered to your ship and the ship will hold it until the last night when they distribute it for you to pack.

This works pretty well for those bottles you buy as gifts. Not quite what you want if you were hoping to have a nightcap in your room.

You are still limited in how much you can import back into the United States without owing tax. And you will need to pack your booze in your checked luggage if traveling by plane.

While this may be true on other cruiselines, it's my understanding that DCL will not accept deliveries in foreign ports. Thus, you can't buy alcohol in Grand Cayman.

Nope, it has to be carried off for the same reason it has to be carried on. You have to declare whatever you are bringing back into the US. If you buy it and drink it all, you don't have to declare it. If you buy it and drink 1/2 of it, your have to declare the full value.
