We have/We Do

We have two lovely children, that being said, shortly after weaning my DD, we left them with their gradparents and hit DCL by ourselves...

We've since taken them on a cruise with us and have some planned in the future, one by ourselves, a couple with all of us.
Very nice vacation either way!

We don't have any kids yet, but we did go on the Fantasy last year with the two of us adults.

We had a fabulous time and were seated with two other childless couples at dinner for the MDRs.

We would love to go again, but still have to work on saving for the price.

2012 was our first time cruising with DCL and we went twice on the Dream as a family - in June and August. The first we booked 14 mos out and we had such a fantastic time we ended up jumping on a *GT rate for the August sailing and had another great time. I told my Mom when we got back that I wanted her to experience it one day and I'd love to take her. Fast forward to October and I was looking around and noticed they had military rates for the Fantasy (didn't show the Dream at the time) and she is eligible for the military rate due to being a retired military spouse and has an ID card. It was an unbelievable deal but I had to break it to my DS and DH! It was for the 12/8 sailing so there was no way I was pulling DS out of school for that. What was "hard" was that we knew as a family the Fantasy was going to be our next adventure together so the fact that I did it without them was hard at first. They understood since my Mom hadn't been on a vacation in a long time and my Mom and I hadn't been any where solo in over 20 years.

I was so glad my Mom accepted my offer to let me treat her to the cruise - we used her discount but I paid for her trip - as she needed a true vacation.

It pulled at my heart strings a few times and I had a few "moments", but the sheer joy my Mom experienced and the much more relaxed pace did make it worthwhile. One afternoon we even took a nap for 2.5 hours! I don't regret it one bit but I won't pretend it was easy and they were never in my thoughts. I knew they were fine but I'm a sentimental sap by heart!

Naturally while on board, I secured our family Fantasy sailing for my DS' Spring Break in 2014 so all is good for now!

I had a blast and don't regret it.

Enjoy,
Heather

We've done 3 DCL cruises with our kids and two without. I've loved them all. I wouldn't hesitate for a second taking the cruise without children. So much to do in the adults only areas!

We're going to do it!

Thanks again to all of you chimed in with your experiences and opinions. Reading your replies pushed DH and me off the fence and we're going to go for it! I just paid the deposit (I had placed a 3-day hold on Friday) and even bought plane tickets. For those of you in the DC area, US Airways has super cheap non-stop flights to MCO in early September right now!

It's funny because I've researched so many resorts over the past few months, but I always felt the need to continue looking. Now that we've decided on the Disney cruise, I can stop researching and just sit back & wait until September. I can't wait!!

I guess I would be torn too. I would LOVE to cruise DCL without my DS, but I know I would a) miss my DS and b) wish he was there because he loves it so much!

My wife and her best friend did a DCL cruise last year and loved it. My wife and I did the repositioning cruise from Vancouver to LA this year and loved it. We love Disney cruises; doing one without the kids was just fine. My wife and 9 other women are doing a "girls' trip" cruise this February, and my wife will be joined by her best friend for a second cruise immediately following the girls' trip.

We have seen plenty of adults cruise Disney without kids. It does sound weird at first, but why wouldn't you? If you want a casino and raucus/racy parties, DCL is not the place to be. If you enjoy good service, fun activities, and you are interested in the ports where the ship is going, then DCL is perfect.

Glad to hear you decided to go.

My wife and I have taken our children on 5 Disney cruises and many week-long DVC stays at WDW. But we're going on a cruise by ourselves this April. I'm sure they're a little disappointed, but as another poster commented, our children are not Disney deprived.

I mean, come on. They've been on FIVE Disney cruises before they even graduate high school...every one should be so lucky.

If they were younger, I might have some minor misgivings, but they'll be 15 and 18 by April, so they're old enough now to understand Mom and Dad get to have some time alone. Not to mention they'll be in school that week. Plus they have a WDW trip coming up in July.

I'm a 31 year old male, no kids, and I've cruised the Magic/Wonder a total of 5 times now. 4 of those times with other adults, and once solo!

I'm currently planning my 6th cruise for October -- it'll be our honeymoon! This will be her first cruise period! We are very excited!

This last fall DD#2 started college so DW and I decided to go on one of the DCL Pacific Coast Cruises. We had a wonderful time.

Through the cruise meet we were able to find several couples also traveling without their children. We even arranged to have two other couples traveling without their children as table mates.

While we will continue to travel DCL with our children, we "now" will not hesitate to travel DCL without our children.

The best thing I can do for my kids is to maintain a strong relationship with DW. I love my children and enjoy being with them, but someday when they are off raising their own children and building their own life, it will just be DW and myself and we need to know how to get along without the distraction of the kids.

Go have fun, we did

Hi Bill!!!

Dh and I took the same Pacific Coast Cruise as Bill and his wife (we were table mates) It was our first cruise without the kids and I would not hesitate to do it again. It was nice to enjoy the adult areas on the ship that we really hadn't enjoyed as much when we cruised with the kids.

I didn't feel bad not taking the kids on that one. They had been on the MR cruise last April and will be cruising with us on the Fantasy next June.

If the Wonder had stayed here on the West Coast, I'm sure there would have been more cruises for just DH and I

DH & I have taken 3 Disney cruises (Bahamas, Alaska, & Mexico). We have had the time of our lives & will take another in the future, no doubt. We do not have children.

Taking a Disney cruise hadnt even crossed my mind until I read the post about the special rates for late August through September. With the promotion, we could take a 4-night cruise on the Dream for substantially less than any of the land-based trips weve discussed. I know that there are plenty of adults-only places and activities on the ship and on CC, but Im just not sure how it would feel to be on a Disney cruise without DD (not to mention how she would take the news!). Id love some input from those of you who have done this or considered it and decided against it.
I haven't read the responses but my husband and I took two Disney Cruises in 2012. One for our honeymoon and one was supposed to be for our first anniversary but it turned into "we got a great deal so we moved it up 3 months" lol. So we loved the first enough to book for our anniversary.
We had a great time on both. We hardly saw any kids outside of the dining rooms and the shows. I think if we chose to cruise again I want to try another line before we go back to Disney just to see what is out there though.

OP, so glad you decided to go for it. I have done 3 DCL cruises with my family (Eastern Caribbean, Med and Alaska). My kids are 8 and 10. We did the Med and Alaska cruises with another family. This past summer, I started seeing GREAT deals for the 5-night cruises on the Magic out of NY up to Canada. I think part of the reason the deals were so good was that they were for the Sept. cruises after most kids had gone back to school. I invited my DH, but he wasn't that interested in the itinerary, and the Canada cruise was just about 3 weeks after we stepped off the Wonder on our Alaska cruise. So I convinced my girlfriend (same family who did the Med and Alaska cruises with us) that we should take a girls' cruise. Everything about it was fabulous: the cruise fare for one was practically free, having to buy only one plane ticket from San Francisco to New York also saved a bunch of money and the two of us had SUCH a good time. I have loved the DCL cruises we have taken as a family, and we have another scheduled on the Fantasy this April. But it was so nice to do the girls' trip. We had so much time to relax and just enjoy the ship not having to worry about whether the family was having a good time, did the kids want to go to the clubs, did they want to get picked up from the clubs, etc. We spent a ton of time in the Quiet Cove, did some of the later night adult activities that we had never done before, did a couple of adults-only excursions, and I did an adults-only Art of the Theme Ship tour that was awesome. That cruise actually felt longer and was definitely more relaxing than the 7-night Alaska cruise we took as a family. Sure, the kids had a little difficulty understanding why I was going on a Disney cruise without them, but they got over it pretty quickly. I would absolutely do another girls' cruise without the kids or one with DH if he were interested.

I've been on more Disney cruises WITHOUT my kids than with them! My husband and I honeymooned in Disney then did the Wonder for 4 nights and absolutely fell in love with DCL. I returned back to the wonder a couple of years ago with my sister and last year my husband I sailed on the Dream with another adult couple. There is SO much to see and do without kids, and while we did miss our kids we had fun being kids ourselves while on board. We took advantage of not having the kids and booking more spa time and grown up excursions. We also received a whole new level of service from our dining waitstaff on our last cruise without the kids.

I would not do DCL without kids. The largest part of my enjoyment is watching them feel and discover the Disney magic. I would pick a diff cruise line for us if we wanted to go without kids.
