I found your threads last night and have loved reading about your adventures moving to Disneyland. You are proof it doesn't take tons of money to enjoy yourself in any situation.

I look forward to finding out how long it actually took you to find jobs, and also hear about when you finally got to enter The Parks. I give you so much credit, being able to wait. I would have had a nervous breakdown being so close and yet so far......LOL

Taylor - I have been enjoying reading about all your adventures with Tracy. I do not post much, but had to pop on and thank you for your post about the OC zoo. I have lived in OC my whole life and have never been nor did I really understand what was there. After reading your post tonight, I called my mom to see if she wanted to go for her B-day......she was thrilled.

As an OC native, I'm sure there are many other fun things to do that are overlooked. I look forward to reading about your future outings and I'm sure I'll pick up some more excellent ideas!

That is a very cute "zoo"...more of a menagerie than a zoo. I love the bears and the raccoons. Hoping to see more pictures of this place in future posts. I love animals too.

I haven't been to the SDZoo in a while. I had to google to see what the price is when you said it was almost as expensive as DL tix. Not quite....but single admission to the zoo is pricey. The price to the SDZ costs nearly the same as the Melbourne Zoo here. We have a yearly membership to the Melbourne; and that gives us unlimited entry to the Melbourne Zoo, the Werribee Wildlife Park (African safari) and the Healesville Sanctuary (it houses indigenous marsupial animals). If it weren't for the fact that you have to drive 2 hours to get to SD, the yearly membership might be worth it for you and Tracy.
Our thoughts exactly regarding the 2-for-1 deal. Lame. Oh well, we certainly enjoyed the zoo nonetheless.

I guess when I was looking at the San Diego Zoo prices, I was looking at the ones that give you access to both the zoo and the safari park, at which point it does rival Disneyland prices. If we were to do both parks, it would actually be cheaper for us to buy the yearly membership than for us both to get tickets, so we will definitely do that when we do make it down there. Wish it were just a LITTLE closer. The Melbourne Zoo package sounds like a great set of places to visit! I would love to go to a marsupial-specific zoo. They're among my favorite animals.

At my house, we just leave cat food outside for the feral cats and we get to see possums, raccoons, and skunks all for free!
We were glad to discover the zoo too! Sounds like you've got quite the zoo at your house too with all those occupants!

I live on the east coast and can certainly understand wanting to move to California. The weather really gets to us sometimes. You picked a good time to move. You missed a lot of snow this past winter. One storm we got over 2 ft. of snow. Just last Saturday the temperature was 48 degrees at 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Today was a nice day though.

I really enjoyed reading about your stay in Colorado. My sister lives there, in Highlands Ranch. I’ve been there at least 10 times (probably more, I’ve lost count) in the last 20 years.

Colorado Springs…been there several times. I’ve done all the touristy things there….Garden of the Gods, Olympic Training Center, Cog Railway to the top of Pikes Peak, Broadmoor Hotel. We always went to an ice cream shop in the Broadmoor whenever we were in the area. Loved Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, feeding the giraffes, so much fun! All your pictures brought back many memories.

My niece attends CU in Boulder. Last time I was in CO we went to Boulder but really didn’t have much time there. I’ll definitely go back when she graduates.

Glenwood Springs…been by it but never stopped. I’ll have to put that on my bucket list for the next trip. One trip we drove all the way to Grand Junction to see Colorado National Monument. It was beautiful.

Sorry about your troubles on moving day. Glad you are settled in now. Looks like you made a great choice and everything worked out in the end. It’s a really cute apartment and I love the ear hats on the wall.

I’m sorry you didn’t get jobs at Disney. Here is a quote from Walt Disney. “All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me…You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” Well said Walt! Hang in there, you never know what the future holds for you but I think there will be bigger and better things for both of you.

Your Thanksgiving dinner looks great. Except you are missing something…..something green….veggies!!! (Sorry, the Mom in me just came out.) Homemade pumpkin pie is the best…so glad you were able to get more ingredients so you could make it again. Can’t have Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie!

Christmas at Disney looks awesome. Your pictures are terrific. What kind of camera do you use?

Sorry for being so long winded.

p.s. How has your health been? I'm hoping you are doing much better.
Thanks for the compliments on the report! I love writing it, so I'm glad you like reading it!

We definitely picked a good time to move away from the east coast! We actually had just had our UBox sent out from where they were housing it in New Jersey about a week before Sandy hit. Since it was being stored in a coastal town, I'm sure we would have been very worried whether it got flooded and damaged... And we ABSOLUTELY did not miss the New York winter this year. After six of them, I don't think I could handle another!

Glad to hear you've enjoyed frequenting CO. I'm actually writing this from Denver right now. Tracy's on a business trip here, of all things, and I tagged along of course. I don't think I've ever been to Highlands Ranch (maybe passed through it, but don't really remember) but it sounds like you did ALL the touristy things in Colorado Springs.

You'll definitely have to try to spend some time in Boulder someday. I may be a little biased toward my hometown, but I think it's the best place in CO. Glenwood, too, is a must-see sometime. Just don't ride the go-karts.

Moving day was definitely lame, but at least it's in the past now and we still love our place. I'm glad it all worked out in the end.

We definitely haven't gotten discouraged not working for Disney. Now's just not the right time, but it might come along someday. For now, however, both Tracy and I are happy with what we're doing.

Honestly, we would have had some veggies with our Thanksgiving dinner, but we thought it would just be too much food. Usually we have green bean casserole, but with just the three of us, it would have been too much. Yes, homemade pumpkin pie is the best!

We really loved Christmas time at Disneyland and I'm glad you like all the pictures. 90% of my photos are taken with my Canon PowerShot S95 (which is a nice point-and-shoot), and the other 10% are just my iPhone.

And no need to apologize for being long winded! I'm CERTAINLY long-winded when I write my updates, so I like a good thorough response

Healthwise, I'm doing okay. Definitely better than I've been sometimes and as under control as I think it's likely to be. Just have to take each day as it comes and roll with the punches!

Hope you keep enjoying reading along!

I'm so glad you found the report and have been enjoying it! We do, indeed, pride ourselves on making the most of our time despite not having an excess of money.

Don't worry, we made it into the parks before TOO much longer. It was still definitely TORTUROUS sometimes how long we had to wait though.

Yay! I'm so glad you could learn about the zoo from this TR. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy it, especially now that you will have appropriate expectations. Hopefully we'll keep finding fun and unique things to do around OC, and I'll keep writing about them as we do! Thanks for reading

Chapter 33
Christmas Once More

Tracy and I were always admiring the Santa hat Mickey ears that we were seeing at all of the stores around Downtown Disney, but we just couldn’t bring ourselves to pay astronomical Disney prices for ears that we could really only wear for a month out of each year. So when Tracy was at Michaels shopping for a Christmas present for me, she decided to pick up the materials to make our own hats. The Santa hats at Michaels were only about $2 each and she got two pieces of black foamcore. We cut out ear shapes and hot-glued the ears to the hat, and voila—we had Santa ear hats for about $3 apiece.

Of course, after making these hats, we had to take them back to Downtown Disney to try them out. When we arrived, even more decorations had been put up around the main entrance. We liked this big ornament with Tinkerbell atop it.

And here are our ear hats. Tracy even attached he zebra bow she had bought for our day at Animal Kingdom in May.

After walking around a little, we saw the parrot (whose name I sadly forget) was doing her show outside the Rainforest Café. We liked hearing all the words she could say and posed with her afterward.

Now it was off to the one hotel we hadn’t checked out the decorations at yet—Disneyland Hotel!

In general, this was the hotel where we had spent the least amount of time ever. Obviously we had stayed at Paradise Pier on our last trip out, and we had spent hours in the lobby of the Grand Californian. Because the Disneyland Hotel’s appeal as a place to simply walk by wasn’t as obvious, however, we had only really gone there to go to Trader Sam’s at the end of our last trip. Now, however, we were determined to get to know it as well as we could without actually staying there. We walked around the pools first and gaped longingly at the Monorail Slide.

Next, we posed with the topiaries of Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto.

Then suddenly, who should appear, but Goofy??

He ran out from Goofy’s Kitchen on his way over to hang out in the lobby. We had read before coming here that there are often characters in the lobby in the mid-afternoon, and since we had thus far been deprived of any character sightings/interactions since we moved, we thought this would be fun to check out. Goofy apparently makes appearances the most regularly, though others do too sometimes.

After parting ways with our favorite Goof, we decided to check out the gift shop and the rest of the lobby. We loved the Mary Blair artwork.

Also, these teacup chairs.

While we were lounging, who should appear again?

This time, we liked that he was “helping” that family check-in. He was mostly just bored, though, without anyone much in the lobby to interact with, so he came over and sat with us in the teacup chairs.

After bidding farewell yet again, we wandered outside to where the buses drop off. We liked these statues.

Next, we went back in and found where Santa greets the children at Disneyland Hotel.

I leaned in to try to eat the milk and cookies.

We LOVED this wall of old Disneyland memorabilia. We’re becoming quite the fans of Disneyland history now that it’s our home park.

Our final stop of the afternoon was the Coffee House, where we picked up this delicious-looking gingerbread man. The cast member at the register told us we should heat it up in the microwave, and that was a very good decision.

Finally, we walked back out past Trader Sam’s and our favorite fireplace en route back to our car. On the way, we saw this stray cat roaming the grounds of the Disneyland Hotel.

“What a smart cat,” we said to each other, “If I were a stray, there’s no place I would rather live than Disneyland.”

Now, at this time, we didn’t know anything about the Disneyland Cats, and we thought this must be an anomaly. Since this first sighting, however, the kitties have gone on to play quite a prominent role in our lives. But that, as they say, is a story for another day.

For now, we headed out. Christmas itself was just around the corner, and we thoroughly enjoyed having seen all of the different hotels decked out in their holiday glory.

What a great update! Love your hats. They look great.

Nice! You go check out the hotel and you have an extended meet and greet with Goofy. What a great afternoon!

What cute ears you made without the massive Disney cost!

That's so great that Goofy practically spent the afternoon with you two! The Disneyland Hotel has a whole different magic that we have also just begun to discover. I'm eager to hear of your findings!

I just found out about the feral cats of Disneyland. On our visit in January we saw one at DCA, you don't the story of my partner Fran, but she will try to adopt any feline that she comes across. It was quite a spectacle. Since then I have seen quite a few cats, I'm curious to hear your stories.

Your Santa hats are too cute! So crafty.

I love the teacup chairs. The teacups are one of my first memories of Disneyland! I'm hoping to be going to Disneyland next January, I will definitely have to check out the hotel and sit in the chairs.

Hey! We were just watching a Tivo'd episode of Huell Howser (if you don't already watch his programs you would love them on PBS) and he went to the Starr Ranch in OC and I bet that would be a place you two would love. If you haven't been there already, you should check it out!

Glad you like the ears! I can't take much (if any) credit for them as Tracy did most of the work!

We definitely enjoyed meeting Goofy and spending lots of solo time with him. It's the kind of thing that would NEVER be able to happen anywhere at WDW, so we liked that it was a unique Disneyland experience.

We definitely appreciated not having to lay out the Disney bucks for our ears

We also really like what we have explored of the Disneyland Hotel. It's great how different the three hotels are because they all offer such unique things to do.

We honestly didn't believe there would really be cats around the parks until we started seeing them for ourselves. Do you follow the kitties on Twitter? It's @disneylandcats

You should absolutely check out the lobby of the Disneyland Hotel when you're there. In addition to the teacup chairs, there's a huge Mary Blair mural in the carpet. It's all very cool.

Chapter 34
We Wish You a Merry Christmas…

Christmas Eve arrived, and we put all of our presents for each other out under the tree. It had to be a fairly lean year when it came to gift-giving, but that certainly didn’t mean we couldn’t get each other anything. Tracy and I are always very good at “deal finding,” and we had managed to rustle up a decent supply of Amazon.com gift cards from different phone apps that offered rewards. We were, therefore, able to do most of our shopping for each other online without having to lay out much “real” money.

When the presents were under the tree, it still looked quite exciting.

We always open one present each on Christmas Eve, so after getting all ready for bed, we prepared to open our first gifts.

I gave Tracy a Disneyland hoodie that I had found at the Character Depot outlet in Fullerton. Apparently this outlet used to have a decent selection of Disneyland merchandise, but it underwent a change of ownership in the last year or so. Now it is underwhelming at best, but I was able to dig through the junk to find this sweatshirt. It’s actually a child’s extra-large, and it’s still a little loose on Tracy!

Now it was time for my first present.

Tracy got me new slippers because my old ones were wearing down significantly. I love anything with my friend Mickey Mouse on it, and when I put them on with my Disney pajamas, it really pulled the whole outfit together.

Now it was time to go to sleep. Tracy and I always read The Polar Express aloud on Christmas Eve night as one of our favorite traditions. After Santa’s sleigh bell was lost (and found again), we hit the pillows and were out.

We awoke on Christmas morning to find another beautiful California day in lieu of a white Christmas, but we didn’t mind that one bit.

Our stockings had been filled up the night before—by Santa??

Here’s Tracy’s loot.

From left to right, we have:

Red Velvet Coffee from Cost Plus World Market – Tracy had spotted this coffee while we were at the store together and couldn’t understand why I kept insisting she shouldn’t get any even though Red Velvet is her favorite. She didn’t realize I already had gotten this little bag as a stocking-stuffer)

“Snowman Poo” – These little candies are actually quite delicious.

Stroopwafels – Any readers from The Netherlands out there? At the company Tracy worked for in NYC, half the people were from that area of Europe, and one of the engineers from The Netherlands placed a bulk order of stroopwafels from his family back home. These are delicious wafers with caramel sandwiched between them. Almost impossible to describe, really. Anyway, Tracy ordered a couple bags from The Netherlands, and we thoroughly enjoyed them, but when they ran out we were sad because we didn’t think we’d ever find them again. Then one day as we walked through World Market, we noticed these packages of stroopwafels sold right here in the U.S. I had to get some for Tracy’s stocking

A “Meow” car decal – I don’t think I’ve ever explained our use of the word “meow” on my trip reports. Mostly, I think if you all really understood Tracy and my particular brand of “crazy,” you would instantly stop reading. It all started when we re-watched Super Troopers, one of our favorite comedies, a few years ago. Anyone who has seen the movie will know the scene where one of the cops constantly replaces normal words with the word “meow” to see if anyone notices. Since then, we say “meow” in almost every situation that it could be applicable. I don’t think Tracy or I have said the words “yes,” “yeah,” “now” or “immediately” to each other in YEARS (replacing them instead with the words “meow,” “meow,” “meow,” and “im-MEOW-diately” respectively). When I saw someone driving in CO with a “Meow” car decal in their back window, I thought it would be quite fitting to put it on Dumbo, so I found it online.

And now the contents of my stocking.

Again, from left to right, we have:

Hot chocolate and a hot chocolate whisk – Tracy and I had both been craving hot chocolate for several weeks, but it had always happened late in the evening when we didn’t want to go to the store. Now we had a decent supply to last us.

Piroulines and Chocolate Bears – I have quite the sweet tooth, so of course, my stocking had to mostly be candy-based.

Drawing paper – As you all know, I had discovered quite the love of drawing Disney characters after our first trips to the Animation Academy and my subsequently finding tutorials to draw other characters online. I was drawing in a little notebook, but Tracy got me some actual drawing paper. I felt like quite the professional!

Now it was time for Duffy to open his present.

We hadn’t gotten him the Baby Bjorn he had his eye on, but we did get him…

A Pluto hat to match mine!

The first wave of excitement over for the morning, we decided to make some breakfast. Christmas is all about indulging, so we made ourselves some cinnamon rolls!

Gooey and delicious!!

Now it was time to go back under the tree for some more present opening.

My first present was COMPLETELY unexpected. It was… a Duffy shirt!!

Now, you may be wondering, does this shirt ACTUALLY exist? The answer is, officially, no. Disney hasn’t had the brilliant idea to make clothes featuring Duffy yet (at least in the States), but Tracy found an Etsy seller who makes them. So as not to infringe on copyrights, the seller had to list it as “Doffy” and “Duff-Bear.” We thought both options were funny. I loved my shirt, though, and couldn’t wait to wear it to meet Duffy.

Of course, it only made sense that Tracy’s first present would be:

The Duffy wristlet! She had been so sad not to get this guy on our first trip to World of Disney (and every subsequent trip after), so of course I had to get it for her. He looks especially like a simpleton in wristlet form and we love it.

For some reason, I never got a picture of my next present, but it was a “Learn to Draw Disney Characters” book featuring instructions for the Fab Five, and characters from Winnie the Pooh, Lilo and Stitch, The Lion King, and several Pixar movies. I was thrilled to start drawing, and suddenly the drawing paper from my stocking made extra sense.

Next, I got Tracy this flower pot from the Jim Shore Disney Traditions collection. I thought it would be fun to plant something in it for our balcony.

She followed that up with giving me this Jim Shore balcony ornament of... a raccoon! Since we haven’t found any raccoons to be our friends in OC (except those at the zoo), this was exciting for me.

Keeping with the raccoon theme, I gave Tracy her last gift: Raccoon earrings I had bought for her at a store in Nederland, CO when we were there in August. It was probably the earliest in the year I’ve ever started Christmas shopping.

Gift-giving done for the day, it was about time to move onto phase two of our holiday: getting ready for our family Christmas dinner. First, however, we had to enjoy another of our traditions.

We always get Chinese food for our Christmas lunch (because they’re the only restaurants that are open) and this time we wanted to try out the Chinese restaurant that was within walking distance of our condo. Moustache, our landlord, had recommended it highly, so we walked over and picked up some takeout. Our favorite Chinese dish is Kung Pao Chicken. It was definitely good, but wouldn’t make my list of the best I’ve ever had.

Soon after lunch, Steve came over to spend the afternoon with us and eat dinner together. We put on TBS and half-watched A Christmas Story (at least once) during its marathon while we chatted. After we’d had enough of the same movie on repeat, we switched over to the Disney Parks Christmas Parade and watched jealously, dreaming of being at the park right up the road.

We put Christmas dinner in the oven around mid-afternoon. One of Tracy’s parents' gifts to us and Steve was to pay for our dinner fixings. We were, therefore, able to go a little more “all-out” than we could have done otherwise. The main course was to be Prime Rib. We were a little nervous about cooking this expensive hunk of meat for the first time and didn’t want to ruin it. Lo and behold, our worries about overcooking were all for naught. Instead, it took almost twice as long as the directions said it would for it to get hot enough to be safe to eat. We kept checking the temperature every half-hour to see if it was done yet once we had reached the scheduled dinner time, and almost 2 hours after it was supposed to be ready, it was finally done.

We put out the other sides we had made (Mashed Potatoes with Gravy and Scalloped Corn).

We carved up the Prime Rib and it looked perfect.

And now, we finally got to enjoy Christmas dinner. You can also notice the Stout from Steve’s favorite local brewery, Stone Brewing, which he brought over a growler filled with. It was really good!

We also followed up dinner with another homemade Pumpkin Pie, but I forgot to photograph it.

Once dinner was done, Steve headed home and we retired to our stupor of full stomachs and warm hearts. On the whole, it was a really nice Christmas.

TEACUP CHAIRS!!!!!!!! I want one, I want one! Those are probably the coolest Disney chair I have ever seen. Can you steal one for me? Well, not really cause I don't want to get you in trouble with Disney. And that is so cool that Goofy just plopped down with you in the teacup chair! What a fun little treat!

Do I sense some kitty foreshadowing? I mean, stray cat in DL, meow bumper sticker (even though not directly related to kitties with your explanation), and the fact that kitties are cute and irresistible?? I guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Looks like you guys had an awesome Christmas, even if it was gift-light. It doesn't matter how many presents you get, as long as they're good, and in your case, Disney gifts are about as good as they come, so you made out pretty well. I love the matching Pluto hat for Duffy! I have wanted a Duffy for quite awhile now, and since he's all over your TR, I keep thinking about getting him. I wanna dress him up all cute and stuff, but I don't think I would get him a bjorn either, just cool outfits so he can travel in style.

Looking forward to more updates to see what the new year has brought you guys out in Cali!

What a sweet Christmas you two had! You two are really cute! Such thoughtful gifts that you gave each other too!

I do not tweet, so I don't follow the cats on Twitter, maybe if they had a Facebook page, I might.

Sounds like you guys had a great Christmas. I love that they were almost entirely Disney-related gifts. And love the santa ears.

Shockingly, I've never been to that zoo. Unwittingly, I'd skipped irvine regional my whole life and only rode the train this Easter. We used tickets we bought as part of a booklet for kids Easter activities. I wouldn't have paid $20 either.

Be sure to catch the Orange Street Fair at the end of the summer. Super crazy but tons of food booths etc. Go earlier in the day for fewer drunken college students.

And I haven't been to the Disneyland hotel since they had dancing waters there. Love the teacup chairs.
