What do most 9 year old boys wear on formal and semi formal night?

Would nice khakis and a button down shirt work?

What do most 9 year old boys wear? Whatever their mothers want them to!

Yes, khakis and a clean, neat shirt will be fine. And if it doesn't stay clean and neat, that's OK too.

My 8 year old will be in kahkis, a polo shirt, nice brown shoes, and a belt. The belt makes it formal in our family ; ) I would love to have him wear a button down shirt, but persuading him to wear pants and a polo shirt is about all I can handle on vacation.

That is what my 6 year old wore on our cruise last year. Some nights we would do khakis and a polo shirt.

My 11 and 8 year old boys wore black dress pants, shirt and tie on both formal and semi-formal nights. They wore khaki's and a polo shirt on the cruise casual nights.

This is how it works in our family. The kids wear what I have decided ahead of time they will wear. If they want to go on the cruise, they will wear what I want them to wear at dinner. There is no fighting about it on board because the expectation is set ahead of time. It's honestly never been a big issue.

On some cruises we have gone very formal. Yes, even the boys wore tuxes (bought on Ebay for a good price). Other times they wore dress pants, shirts and ties. Once we decided to go more casual and just did the khakis with collared shirts. It just depended on what I felt like before the cruise and what kind of pictures I wanted.

Having said that, you will see people dressed in a WIDE variety of clothing so you will pretty much fit in no matter what you wear.

On our previous cruises, my DS was pretty good about the formal night thing and enjoyed wearing his full suit (jacket, vest, tie, etc). For Semi-formal, he just wore the same dress slacks with a different shirt, tie and vest.

But for our Fantasy trip in June, we will probably go a little less formal for him, just to save on the luggage space.

You will see everything from tuxes to people in jeans on Formal night so pretty much anything goes.

What about on the other nights? Is it frowned upon for boys to wear nice khaki shorts?

My boys wore nice pants & polo for dinner except for formal night they wore a shirt and ties.

Did not bring their dress shoes, had no room in the suitcases. I think they wore their black running shoes. In any case it did not stand out unless you were looking at peoples shoes...

Frowned upon by whom? DCL requests no shorts in the dining room, but many people disregard this request. Do remember that the dining rooms can be cold when deciding on clothing.

I bring my son black and khaki pants with button up short sleeve shirts. He's comfortable and he looks great in family photos.

There really is a wide variety of, uh, "styles", on any given night, even if there is a pre-set recommendation such as formal, semi-formal, pirate, etc. Our family (including DD10 and DD8) tends to be rule followers, so we usually follow the suggestion, at least avoiding jeans and shorts at dinner. There is still a little something special about having dinner on a nice cruise ship that, at least for our family, suggests trying to look nice (e.g., at least khakis for gents...we have it easy!). There were a few nights where we changed into something more comfortable after dinner for various other activities around the ship, but we tried to treat dinner as an "event" each night, even if just for the hour or so that it takes.

On the Dream last year, we didn't read the Navigator carefully and didn't realize it was semi-formal night until we got down to the atrium and saw that most people had stepped up their wardrobe a notch. However, with khakis and a polo/golf shirt, I still had lots of good company and did not feel out of place at all. For young boys, you could easily get by with that combo most any night -- even formal -- but it can be fun to really step it up for formal night, even if replacing the shirt with a button-down, tie and/or jacket. On the Fantasy last month, we were a bit more careful to pay attention and came fully prepared (tux and nice dresses for formal night...and full-on pirate costumes for pirate night).
