US Airways Carry-On Question

I've booked our flights for September with US Airways and we have a layover both ways. For a carry on I see it says:

Up to 45 in/115 cm (14 x 9 x 22 in or 36 x 23 x 56 cm)
Up to 40 lbs/18 kg

It then goes on to say:

Carry-on rules for US Airways Express
Not sure if you’re on a US Airways Express flight? Please check your confirmation. If you're on a flight operated by Air Wisconsin, Colgan, Piedmont, PSA or Trans States, you’re allowed to carry on 2 items.
1 personal item (such as a purse or laptop) in the cabin and;
1 small carry-on bag. Your carry-on bag will be tagged, placed in the cargo bin and returned plane-side or in the jetway when you arrive.

On 1 leg of each days of our flights my confirmation says:

Operated by Republic Airlines dba US Airways Express

So, although it's not one of the "operated by" companies above, since it says "Express", does that mean our carry-on bag will be tagged and placed in the cargo bin? If so, can it still be the dimensions and weights listed above?

Sorry, I know this was long but I'd be really thankful for any info that anyone can provide.

Does your confirmation show the model of your plane? Like CRJ200 or EMB175? The EMB 175's have larger overhead bins than the CRJ200. Republic usually operates larger regionals than the others.

Even if your carryon mets the size requirements, there is always the possiblity that it will be tagged and put in cargo, no matter how big the plane is. If the overheads are full, the rest get tagged.

Most of the smaller, regional jets operated us US Airways Express don't have large enough overhead bins to fit a normal carry-on bag. You can still take the same-sized carry-on bag, but you won't have it with you (or above you, actually) during the flight. It will get tagged and you will need to leave it before you board the plane. Usually somewhere on the jet bridge (if using one) or on a cart sitting on the tarmac near the plane. It will go under the plane with the checked bags, but in most cases you will pick it up on the jet bridge or from a cart on the tarmac at your destination and will NOT go to baggage claim. If you have questions about that, just ask the gate attendant.

You will probably be OK will a rollaboard on that plane. Again, there's always the possibility the bins will be full and you will have to get it tagged.

So, if your bag will not fit in the cabin and is tagged to be put in the cargo area but meets the carry-on size dimensions then will you have to pay a baggage fee, in most cases?

There is no charge to gate check luggage. But if you do check at the gate, make sure you find out if the bag will be returned to you on the jetway when you arrive or if it will be going to baggage claim.

As the PP noted, no. You would not have to pay a baggage fee if you are required to check a bag at the gate because the overhead bins are full or where the plane you are on can't ever handle the larger bags.

In this specific circumstance--where the plane actually has overhead bins large enough to accommodate roller bags but those bins are full--US Air generally checks the bag through to luggage claim at your destination. They sometimes will ask for volunteers to check their bags earlier to avoid delays later in the boarding process, but the result is the same.

In cases where you are on a smaller RJ that can't ever accommodate larger carry ons in the overhead bins they generally will collect the bags plane side or on the jet bridge and return them plane side or on the jet bridge at your destination.

Just ask the gate agent and they will tell you where to get your bags.
