Purchases on-board
How can you make purchases on board the ship? Can you use cash, credit? I'm assuming they prefer you to charge things to your room. Also wondering about in Nassau what's the best way to pay for things?

All shipboard charges are to your room account. At Nassau, we used cash.

As Woody said, all purchases onboard the ship are charged to your room. You may then pay up the charges using cash, travelers checks or credit, debit or disney gift cards. We checked in daily to do this, so we knew exactly where our money was going.

You ARE using cash or credit - you tie your credit card to your stateroom or add cash to your shipboard account. It just means you don't have to carry anything else with you.
I do not carry a purse or wallet while onboard. It's liberating!

Yep!
And if you have money leftover that you added from gift cards they can return the money to those (so keep them).

Has anyone in the history of cruising ever had money left over? Ha!
It does get a little too easy sometimes to throw things on the room key/charge...only to get that ominous multi-page bill at the end of the cruise! We had a Visa gift card as well as some reward points from our Disney Visa, so during the cruise I went to Guest Services to get them to apply these to our room account. In one case, they applied the points and reserved some charges already made to my "default" credit card. In the other (the smaller gift card), they applied the gift card amount to our account and left it as a credit. I guess they knew we'd have at least that much still to charge for cruise-end gratuities, etc., so they did not reverse any credit card charges already made.
