I also recommend getting a nook tablet and running it as an android tablet with an sd card. Dh and i both have them and we use them all the time. We paid $99 for refurbished ones, and i think it was a great deal.
I'd much rather have access to the full android market rather than be locked into just the kindle or nook one. There are tons of free apps, and i read on it too. I haven't paid a penny beyond my purchase price on apps or books. Also, if you run it from an sd card, your nook can also still run in stock mode, so you dont void the warranty.

We have 2 Nook tablets that run on android platform and also the Nexus Google. Kids love them all, but have to say the Nexus Google is the preferred one.

We also got the Nexus 7 32GB for me, DS 14 and my DS7 and DD 9 got one to share. WE LOVE IT!!! I would highly recommend it. I was able to set up a user account for them and place security around it so that can't access websites without a security filter and can't load apps without my knowledge. It was so simple. We also have NFC capability which is what you see in those commercials where they touch phones to send data from one phone to the other.

I also heard that Asus is possibly coming out with a cheaper Nexus. It is the same as Nexus, just with reduced features. Here is the article:

My DS (26) has a Kindle Fire that we got him for Christmas last year. He also rooted his so it does a lot more than a Fire normally does. He is an IT tech in his day job so he also owns an Acer tablet and a couple of desktops. I agree about looking at refurbs, especially for a 9 yr old.

My dds 12 and 21 got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.0 7 inches for Christmas and love them so far. My dd12 hardly puts hers down.

They are about $200 though I think normally. Agree with others that tablets in $100 range are mostly all junk.

OP here...thanks for all the suggestions! I'm going to return the tablet, then do some more research and most likely go with a better brand, but refurbished. I'm very new at all this and not that tech savvy so it's a bit confusing!

Are all tablets able to gets apps, music, etc from Google Play? The original tablet I got her had that so she received $60 in gift cards from family members

All Android tablets are able to get stuff from Google Play. Apple products get stuff for the iTunes store.

edited to add You might have to root the Nook before you can buy stuff from Google Play.

Be very careful with getting refurbished and look at it before giving it to your child. A father recently gave his child a refurbished Nintendo 3DS and the child saw inappropriate pictures on it. That cannot be undone.

I paid only 90 for my tablet! its a nextbook 7 from amazon. I love it! I play with tons of apps, love reading on it too. Its got a great battery life too. I cant rave enough about it. Oh and its pretty rugged, my freinds kid has dropped it twice and its fine. oh it has slide me installed which has TONS of free apps. I was also able to download kobo, barnes and nobles, and Kindle apps so I can shop at any of the 3

Since you're returning rather than exchanging, keep an eye on Walmart's website. I got a refurbed Galaxy Tab 2 7 inch for $149 in December.

That would be a great deal! Sold out online though and didn't see anything in the store. I did find a new Galaxy Tab 2 for $199 on Newegg, that sounds like a good deal (?)

Newegg had quite a bit of refurbs as well... an Lenovo IdeaPad for $130; a Vizio Tab for $140 (regularly $300), a vitalASC for $140 and a bunch of others but I don't want to make the same mistake as before. It's all so confusing, especially when you're not a techie! I feel like I could spend hours looking at tablets and still buy the wrong one, LOL

I would also suggest the Nexus 7. DS got one for his big Christmas present and he loves it. I couldn't believe he wanted it... he's pro-Apple!

Definitely Nexus 7. Among other considerations, it's also worth noting that it's a 'pure google' experience. E.g. the android OS isn't cluttered with manufacturer specific crap. It's also virtually guaranteed to get updates more reliably and faster than any other tablet on the market.

Many of the cheaper tables, including the one linked by the OP a few posts up, are running older versions of Android (2.3/Gingerbread typically) which don't include all the features of the latest versions.

I suggest spending a bit more and getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. My 4 yr old son got one for Christmas (he thinks it's the ipad mini) and loves it. Actually, so does DH who owns an ipad! We haven't had any problems thus far. The 7 inch is about $179.99.
