Key West to Old Key West day 3

Tuesday 13th November 2013
We got up again really early 4.30-5ish and I made a pot of coffee followed by a quick shower and we were off to Key West.
Theresa was taking a few pictures of the overseas highway as we were going along but its not something that photographs well, you need to see it to appreciate it properly.

It took us about 2 ½ hours to get there and on the way a school bus stopped on the other side of the road. I wasn't sure if I had to stop or not but I did anyway; good job I did, as I was coming to a stop the bus driver was gesturing for me to stop as there was a police car parked up watching the traffic. It was the 1st time in all our trips that we'd come across a stopped school bus.
We managed to find James house straight away as his directions were spot on. They live in a small (by US standards) bungalow but it does have a massive pool. It must have been at least as big as our hotels pool. They have coconuts, oranges and various other exotic plants growing in their garden, we actual saw a coconut fall off of a tree while we were walking around.

It was the 1st time we'd met James and his family, Cat and their cutie-pie daughter Cadance.

Cadance wanted her picture taken but she was anticipating the flash going off.

They had come down on holiday a few years back and liked it so much they went home, packed up and moved. I must admit if I was in a position to, I would do the same.
They took us for breakfast at Blue Heaven which was one of the places I'd looked at on Tripadvisor and also somewhere they'd not been to before but had been meaning to go to for a long time.
It's very popular and can be a difficult place to get a table but we were lucky and got one in the garden straight away.
We all had something different but everyone enjoyed what they had.
The place is very bohemian with chickens running around the dining area.

In the early days it used to be a brothel so its laid back in more ways than one.

James insisted on paying for breakfast; in fact James wouldn't let us pay for anything and we felt very guilty about imposing on his hospitality.
James works at Sloppy Joes but he used to be a trolley driver so he took us on a personnel walking tour of all the highlights.
We visited Sloppy Joes of course,

Margariteville,

The southern- most point

And of course you have got to try chocolate dipped Key Lime pie on a stick from Kermits.

We called back into Sloppy Joes for a drink and I bought a Tee shirt

In the afternoon we took a trolley tour with Louie as our driver. Louie is Cadance's uncle and we had a great time, with Louie making loads of jokes as we went around the tour.

We had a walk around the harbour area and took loads of photos, including this building anyone know what it is?

It's Jimmy Buffets recording studio.

The most stolen sign in Florida.

In the evening we went to Mallory Square to watch the street entertainers and the sunset.

Unfortunately there was a small amount of cloud on the horizon and the sunset wasnt that brilliant.

The entertainers were really good, with jugglers, sword swallowers, musicians and acrobats.
Theresas favourite was the musician with a dog going around collecting dollars in his mouth and putting them in their tin.

We made our way back to James and Cats house where he cooked us up some delicious steaks on the Barbie with potatoes and green beans.

We'd had a great day with James and his family and they had been excellent hosts. It was so sad when we had to go as Cadance burst into tears and didn't want us to go.

We had a 2 ½ hour drive back to Key Largo so had to leave.

We loved our day with them so much and really would like to go and spend more time with them in the future.

This sounds like a really great day. DH would love to drive between the Florida Keys. I am not so keen as this inevitably will lead to Key West and I was less than impressed when we visited in 2009.

What a great day Tony. How fortunate to have your own guide to Key West.

Reminds me that we really need to go back one day for a visit to Sloppy Joes and to see Mallory Square at sunset.

A six foot palm from Wal-Mart would make a very festive Christmas tree

Seeing your photo of the sail boat at sunset--a compelling reason to consider an extended stay in Key West and a hint of how James and Cat could have been convinced to move there. How lucky you and Theresa were to have such a wonderful welcoming committee to give you your personal tour.

I love Key West but have only ever visited on a cruise so would be lovely to spend some more time there.

Sunsets are stunning.
