It really is almost "anything goes." Most women will wear cocktail dresses or something like you'd wear to an afternoon wedding. A few will wear ball gowns, a few will wear blue jeans.

Most men will wear a jacket and tie. A few will wear a tux or military uniform (and they look hot IMHO). Some will wear khakis and a shirt, and a few will wear ripped jeans.

As noted above, you will see tuxes and jeans for men and everything in between. Women wear everything from long gowns to jeans and everything in between. As a female, I chose dressy slacks and a nice blouse. DS enjoyed wearing a shirt and tie. DH doesn't like dressing up so wore Dockers pants and polo shirt.

This is a hot topic among cruisers! My thoughts are to wear what you want. Others believe it is not respectful to dress however you want.

I am not bringing a long gown to wear once on my Med cruise. I am doing jersey knit dresses that are easy to pack and when hung the wrinkles fall out.

As long as you are clean & presentable, it is all good! Palo & Remy has dress codes that you must follow.

We are just off the Christmas Fantasy cruise and very few dressed up. Not a big deal for me because I don't care what anyone wears to dinner, but I did notice that it was less dressy than normal.

Part of the reason (or blame depending on you paradigm) for the anything goes is DCL's fault. The DCL website says "...no jeans..." on the formal nights but on their "packing list" under the cruise planning, the do not exclude jeans. So depending on where you get you dress code/suggestions, you may or may not think jeans are ok for formal night.

That said, society is changing and becoming more accepting of people who deviate from the 'norm'. Young people might be seen with orange or blue hair and we hardly even notice. What kind of pants one wears to dinner seems to be a nit.

Our 1st cruise was a 7 night on the Magic and I rented tuxedos for my hubby and son from the tuxedo company. Both were kicking and screaming the whole time about it UNTIL they had the fun opportunity to wear them. We ended up with great formal night photos and couples photos at Palos. Priceless! We are renting for our next 7 night on the Fantasy and both hubby and son lined up for measurements w/o issue! We do not rent tuxes on the shorter cruises, that's just our mode.

on our 1st cruise on the Dream last Dec for formal night I dressed the whole fam in something you would wear to a wedding. DH had a shirt and tie and dress pants, same as DS. DD & myself wore nice dresses and I wore heels.

I just got worried what the difference between "semi formal & formal" would technically be.

This is only my 2nd cruise.

Formal.

Semi-formal and Palo.
(Maybe I'm more casual than some people, but I liked these dresses and I'm pretty low-key.)

On semi formal night it was basically like a casual night on our cruise. My DH wore pants and a polo and that was fine. I didn't see many people dressed nicer than tht. On formal night there was everything from jeans to tuxes.

Here's DH and I on formal night last May. On semi-formal night we were dressed pretty similar to this, but my dress was black and white instead of sparkly. There was such a wide range of attire that i can't imagine feeling out of place no matter what we were wearing.
