Another travel insurance question

I know this has been a popular topic here recently, but was hoping for a little more info.
We are past the two week period since our deposit, so late getting to this I realize. Are there advantages to using Disney insurance? I know it can be the more expensive option, but wondered if there were benefits.
Thank you for any information.

The advantage to using insurance thru DCL is that the cruise line will apply any amount that is not reimbursed by the insurance carrier toward a future cruise. So, if you have to cancel 2 weeks before the cruise due to an illness which was pre-existing or a work related issue that is not covered, the insurance company will first reject the claim. You submit the rejection to DCL and they issue a credit of the appropriate amount toward a future DCL cruise.

There are a whole list of negatives, which I suspect you are aware of....one is that only items booked thru DCL are covered. This would include air, hotel before cruise, etc. In most cases your hotel would not be covered if your reservation allows it to be canceled and not charged by a given time, etc. Insurance covers only those items which cannot be canceled and either not charged or refunded.

Beyond what kcashner lists, the other negative to the DCL insurance is the fact that they never offer a pre-existing condition waiver.

There is still insurance that you can buy (offered by CSA) that will offer a pre-existing condition waiver as long as you buy the policy before or within 24 hours of making your final payment. It can be a bit more expensive than other policies, but likely not as expensive as DCL's policy.

As far as I'm concerned, the only 2 real advantages of DCL's insurance is a) it's refundable if you cancel it before your paid in full date and b) the future cruise credit kcashner mentioned. It is more expensive for far inferior coverage.

Check out the policies at www.tripinsurancestore.com and www.insuremytrip.com and compare the coverage as well as the cost to what DCL offers. I think you can really do much better than DCL's insurance (unless *all* you care about is not losing your cruise cost if you have to cancel).
