Christmas Cruise help

Hey all, Im pretty new to the boards. They helped tremendously last year planning my 25th anniversary at WDW. Never would have known about (GIFTS OF A LIFETIME) if it wasnt for the boards.. Now Im needing some help with DCL.
We have cruised 4 or 5 times in the past, never on Disney. We are gonna go back to WDW towards the end of 2013 or early 2014. The trip back this time is a surprise for my wife. Ive been searching the boards and have a few questions I need help with. Im wondering what date the decorations go up for Christmas, seems the more I read the more I got confused. Is it different for each ship. We are sailing on the magic or the dream. Id like to go before Thanksgiving but dont know if the decorations are up then. Also Ive sen pics on-board of santa, mickey and minnie photo ops, dressed for X-mas. Is that the whole time the decorations are up on the ships or just the x-mas week? Also, originally we were going Feb. of 2014, no date reserved yet. Then I thought Id surprise her and do it during the Christmas decoration time. What is a dummy reservation? Can I make two reservations and just cancel one? Thanks in advance!

As for the decorations being up before Thanksgiving; we cruised on the Magic/ Western Carribean in 2010 the week before Thanksgiving. The ship was decorated and there was a ginger bread house under construction. Definitely cool and a bonus for us, we were not even thinking about that aspect of the cruise.

yes, you can make two reservations and each one will have its own reservation number so you can cancel one and not the other. Keep in mind you're required to make a 20% deposit on each, tho when you cancel you get your money back (unless it's concierge or a specialty cruise.)

During a Disney cruise you can make a reservation for a future cruise and get a 10% discount, plus an onboard credit. If you don't know what date you'll eventually cruise -- even years from your present cruise -- you just book a cheap cruise as far in advance as possible and put down a 10% deposit. since you have no intention of taking that actual cruise, it's referred to as a dummy cruise. You can change the date and move it forward again and again til you actually find the date you want to keep. There has been some discussion that this policy may change. A dummy cruise can also be referred to as a place-holder cruise.
