Go to dictionary.com and look up "don" and "dawn". There's a pronunciation guide that actualky says the words. You will hear the difference.

DS15 was taking the test...and when the words were right next to each other and he was reading the questions aloud, he had a harder time with them seeming different. I then told him to look at me and ask him what is the nickname for Donald and he said don, and then I asked him to say the time of day when they sunrises and he said dawn, and they sounded completely different. It was like that with many of the examples for him.

I got Midland, in other words no accent. I have lived in the St. Louis are all of my life. BUT, there are plenty of natives here that have an entire accent of their own

When I took the accent quiz, mine came out "96% the West". Born & raised in CA! I remember taking one of these quizzes before, and it asked about the words "are" and "our". Here, we pronounce them the same. I was surprised to learn that "our" is supposed to sound like "hour". So that's the only thing I think we pronounce weird here. Now I make a point of saying it correctly!

I just took the accent quiz and got 100% Boston. I'll take a quick trip to Charlestown to reassure myself that I'm nowhere near that bad!

I just took the accent quiz and I am 88% Boston. Not surprised. I've lived in MA my entire life, but mostly south of Boston.

People with a Boston accent wouldn't pronouce Mary and marry the same. Mary sounds more like "meery", marry sounds like it looks.

I can't wait to take the accent quiz(wouldn't let me do it from work), I was born and raised in Baltimore(pronounced Bal-da-more or Balmer, depending on what part of the city you were raised in). Now Don and Dawn are completely different to me, but Mary, merry and marry sound all the same to me. So who know what it will say I am. hahahaha

That's surprising. I took two different versions of the test and I scored as "Neutral" on both. I was born and raised in Texas and figured that would show up. Nope.

Don't know what to tell you, but I grew up right outside of Boston and I've always said them the same way, as did everyone I knew.
