Is it just me or is it crazy
that Paul McCartney is leading Nirvana? YUK! How could they have picked a mainstream (and to me cruddy) singer for a band that was always NOT wanting to be mainstream. Talk about disappointing . . .
who would you have picked? I think Trent Reznor (sp?) of Nine Inch Nails would have been awesome.

The Mayans were right! No one should lead Nirvana, it died with Cobain. ![]() I was in high school in the early 90s, we take our Nirvana very seriously!

That was just for the one performance. I mean, it is a little weird, but whatever.

However, Paul McCartney is not just a some mainstream singer. He is rock and roll royalty. And to unfavorably compare his singing abilities to Kurt Cobain's is strange to me.

I bet the remaining members of Nirvana felt honored to perform with him. The Beatles weren't just some mainstream band... Without them, Nirvana would have never existed. Plus, even if Nirvana were not trying to be mainstream... They still were. Bands can still be amazing, and talented despite hitting it big. (Sure, sometimes it can ruin a good thing, but not always.) Anyhow... Different generations, but it's still rock'n'roll! :D

The Beatles changed music and so did nirvana. It makes sense. At the same time, it wasn't really like nirvana, it just happened to be a performance by the former members avec Sir Paul. I thought it was a great performance and I'm sorry it ruffled your feathers so much. I'd hate to see your reaction to Neil Young playing with Pearl Jam or that guy from Bad Company playing with Queen. It was also far better than when Jimmy Page played with puff daddy or whatever his name is.
Also, "mainstream" or not, Paul McCartney is a great songwriter and performer who influenced multiple generations of musicians. I just re-read your original post and it reeks of hipster a la anti mainstream. |

Nirvana was honored to play with Sir Paul. I'm sure it was their choice, and their fantasy, in fact. No one forced them into it.
Seriously, Paul McCartney pretty much stands alone. There's a reason he always closes any show he's on, even when you have The Rolling Stones and The Who on it. |

I am a big Nirvana fan, and couldn't watch the performance.
I watched Chris play a bunch of Nirvana songs with The Presidents of the United States of America, and it was amazing! I took my son because he is a musician and I knew that was the closest he would ever get to seeing Nirvana perform, as Kurt passed before he was even born. We live in his hometown. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KL06SEhzDo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T03CHGDjqHM They would have been great to do Nirvana songs at the benefit. Keep it in Washington State!! Last edited by rszdtrvl; 12-13-2012 at 09:36 PM. |

And by the way, nobody was more mainstream that Nirvana was in the early-mid '90s. It's funny, everyone remember Kurt Cobain's whines about not wanting to be famous over the last three years of his life, but what nobody remembers is that he spent the better part of the first 24 trying to be just that.

Well, Cobain would be the first one insulted by your comment, since he idolized McCartney, and in fact, he was an inspiration for him to become a performer.
