About how much does your family spend on board?

We're taking a 5 night out of Miami in Feb and I'm trying to figure out a ballpark for how much we'll spend on board for my husband, DS7, DS4, & myself. I want to start buying some GCs (and hopefully getting a few as Christmas gifts!) to put on our KTTW cards, but don't know how much in GCs to get. We already have $175 in OBC from our TA.

My husband will probably drink moderately (3-5 beers/day I'm guessing), I will drink lightly (probably average of 1/day, but I like the fru-fru expensive drinks ). We won't do any spa services or anything like that. Probably will buy a few pictures, and a few souvenirs. I'll probably give each boy a $50 GC for them to buy their own souvenirs with. Other than that, I'm not sure what else we'd spend money on while on board.

A few questions....
1. If I put the GCs on our acct through guest services, can I use that money for tips? What about for tipping room service deliveries?

2. Can I use GCs on the DCL website for booking things like Palo & excursions?

3. If I put more GC money on our account than we end up using, will I get it back in any form? Or do I lose it?

Thanks in advance for any advise you can offer!!

Yes, GCs can be used for tips, Palo and Excursions (paid with shipboard account, not prior to the cruise). You can add money from GCs to your shipboard account prior to travel as well (just call it in to them). Any extra money will be returned to the GC, however, so make sure to keep the plastic cards just in case!

Thanks! That makes me feel better knowing that I will get back whatever we don't spend! I was picturing DH trying to chug like 20 beers the last night to use up the rest of the credit! I guess I could always force myself to go get a massage or something.....lol

Do I still need to keep the cards if I have the Disney GC app?

If I have the app how can the money go back on them? Will it show up on the app? Or just the cars?

You know you can bring your own beer on board. We walked right through security with a case of beer. It's much cheaper than buying it on board. Beer is beer. I like the fu-fu drinks those are hard to make in the room so I buy them.

Just like with credit card refunds, they already have the gift card information and so they do not need the actual card to return money. It should show up on the app that there was money added just as if it was used, but you would need the card if you wanted to use the card again for something else.

$600 + OBC = $775. Tips could be $300. $475 left, minus $100 for kids =$375. That may be sufficient. IMHO

Tipping for room service should be done in cash (bring several one dollar bills). DCL excursions and Palo/Remy will show up on your onboard account/bill you pay at the end of your cruise.

Any particular reason why cash is preferable? We ran out of cash last time, so I just signed the slip.

Our biggest expense is usually excursions and regularly expected tips. Other than that, we usually spend:

60 bucks for Palo
100 bucks on souveniers
20 bucks for a "tasting"
20 bucks for a couple of "fruity drinks" on Castaway
20 bucks cash for room service

You can make drinks in your room...and with free soda available, we are mostly happy with that when we are out and about. We're not really big drinkers anyway---but the right mood sometimes calls for a drink.

We just did a 7 day on the Magic Dec 1- 2 adults and 1 child. We spent $1000 onboard. That covered tips, excursions, Palo, drinks, shopping and Palo.

We spent about $1100 on board for our 7 night Fantasy. That included tips for four people, extra tips for waiters, fire & ice manicure, water for the room, a couple of glasses of wine, a moderate photo package, bingo, a couple of small souvenirs, several hours of nursery time (maybe 9 or so), and some arcade time. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

We didn't pay for any excursions, Remy, or Palo, but obviously those would add extra costs, as would things like renting snorkel gear.

Yes, but only if they're saved on a rewards redemption card.
