Not a teacher myself, but I was just talking to my friend about this same subject (she is a teacher/librarian/media specialist).

YES she will be working over the holiday. She has assignments to grade, assignments to put together, and lesson plans to do. At some point she will spend a couple of days at the school (even though it is "closed") in order to make sure everything is organized and ready to go before the kids come back. Now, she did not give an assignment for over break, but that was her choice. However, it is not fair to think teachers do this to be "mean" or that they don't also have work to do and just sit on their butts during the holiday.

Not much of a rant, but saw something funny at Sam's Club yesterday. A lady with her daughters had a cart full of stuff, and she saw another register open up. She ran over to the register without the cart, then called for her girls to bring the cart. "Hurry! Hurry! Bring the cart over! Quick!"

Someone tried to go around her and check out, and an NBA basketball player could not have boxed out for a rebound any better than that lady was boxing out that person to keep them from going ahead of her--all the while yelling at her kids to bring the big ol' heavy cart over. "Hurry! Bring it over!"

She was working so hard to get ahead in line and be the first person to check out in that lane, I thought it was funny and I felt sorry for her, all at the same time. She really needed that victory.

Fourth grade teacher here. We're out of school December 24 through January 2. Our school will be open December 27 and 28 so teachers can come into work and catch up on paperwork. I also take work home with me. (Not complaining, just stating facts about my career.)

That being said, I would never assign any kind of homework over a break. I don't even assign homework on the weekends. That's family time, and kids need a chance to relax, too.

i'm so sorry! i know how frustrating it is! most of the time, i don't mind being left alone in the office, i actually accomplish more when the men aren't around, since i'm not being interrupted every 2 minutes. however, with needing to do two weeks worth of work in 4 days (we're closed tomorrow), it sure would be nice to have the guy who actually makes the decisions around for a little while to make them!

and i wouldn't be at all surprised if, while i'm supposed to be off work next week, i get at least one phone call saying he needs me to come to the office, to do something for the bank switch. now, bear in mind, i'm just the bookkeeper...i don't sign checks (he and church treasurer do that) or make any decisions about where the money goes. yet, i'd be willing to bet i end up working at least one day next week, even though i already have all the documents that the new bank needs together.

okay teachers, if you want to assign work, why couldn't you make it extra credit - that way those who want to do it do, and those who don't, don't?

Oh and sorry you don't have a break, but it is called your job. Most people don't get 2 weeks either, but these are kids and they aren't employed in a full time job and getting paid. Christmas break should be left alone.

ETA, None of my kids or my friends with kids have EVER complained about them being bored. They somehow find something to do.
This really burns me up! Teachers don't get PAID for breaks or holidays. I don't know why everybody assumes we do, but we don't. I have a contract to work 200 days during the school year. I get paid to work only those 200 days (180 school days, 10 built in snow days that we never get but would be made up in work days, 10 in-service days.) As a teacher I put in HUNDREDS of hours that i don't "get paid" for. How many of you get paid vacation at work? Guess what? Teachers don't!

Seriously?? Is the world going to end if your kid has to do an assignment or 2? We (teachers) are all under the gun to meet requirements for state testing and No Child Left Behind, etc.
The question has been posed, do teachers work over the break? Yes, of course we do. I spend countless hours doing lesson plans, preparing paperwork, reorganizing the classroom, cleaning, and the list goes on. BTW, I work during the summer too.

Here's a link if any of you want to track Santa's progress with their kids...

Why? My elementary kid gets work and I tell her to do it (not it sucks) and she does it. End of conversation for us. Why would you be irritated? They shouldn't have to work? I think it is important, then maybe some will grow up knowing the difference between principle and principal.

I don't have two weeks but almost! Oh,well, I chose this proffession (not a "job", sorry) so I will just have to deal with the time off! Oh, yea and sometimes I actually don't do any work!! So really, it is a vacation for me. I will just wait until February and April (and the summer too!). Glad I went to school for teaching, I love my career!

Don't even bother. 24 years of teaching and it has always been this way. Some people really resent us. I have always had to defend myself but I should not even bother. Just know that what you do counts. Just watch the news.

I dont have issue with teachers giving homework, but please make it individual work. No group projects over breaks, please! Trying to coordinate everyone with their visits to grandma etc, it is a pain to get them togther.
