My wife and I go every year during December, as we both work in education and Christmas break affords us two-three weeks off. We have been two weeks before, one week before, the weekend leading in to Christmas, and the week following Christmas throughout the years. In my opinion, the best time that we have found has been around 12/13 - 12/18. As the PP said, the earlier in December the better, but we have found (historically) that this time isn't bad at all. This time is usually before kids are out of school for the holidays, and usually right at the end or just after Pop Warner. As far as the weekend leading into, Christmas week, and week after...FORGET IT!! The week leading in isn't real bad, but the closer you get to 12/25, the larger the crowds get!
We are going this year 12/14 - 12/17, and even with FLE opening 12/6, TouringPlans only have the parks maxing on Saturday 12/15 at a 7, overall. The rest of the time is sub 5.

Last year my mom and I went 14th-20th of December and it started to get pretty crowded round the middle of our trip. Our last day was Epcot and it was awful! Shoulder to shoulder with people. However the 14th-17th were really light crowds.

I thought there was a recession? When we went to DW last it was September of 2011, and it was busy and crowded. The same for the year before. Aren't people worried about the fiscal cliff? Guess not. I am looking at possibly paying $1000 to $2000 come tax time [I usually get $100 from Uncle Sam].
