Panic!

We leave for a cruise in 12 days. DD just came down with the flu. We caught it in time and she is on Tamiflu. DH got a shot months ago. DS and I have not had the shot. We are going to get one today. I know it takes two weeks for it to take effect, but I've read that in healthy people it can take as little as 7 days for the antibodies to build up. Why did I not think to get flu shots for everyone earlier when I knew we were going to be on a cruise ship for Christmas?!

Good luck, OP. I hope your DD is better by then and nobody else comes down with anything.

A flu shot does not gaurantee no flu, it just means you won't the strain they think is going to be the most troublesome this season. There's tons of others out there you can get. Just be deligent about handwashing, etc and good luck.

Hand-washing, sanitize things she comes in contact with, and increase your vitamin c intake. My son has the flu right now, and this is what the doctor recommended to us to keep the rest of the family healthy, or try to anyway. Also, limit her contact with the rest of the family. Sounds kinda mean, but if she can keep her germs in her room, it might help too. DS has been "banished" to his room here.

My husband just got over the flu and I have had a cough since his symptoms begin. Good news is he is better in less than a week.

I totally relate to this. I never get the flu shot (well, maybe once), and, because I knew we were doing a 14 night cruise in Oct, and we would pretty much be in close contact with my 2000 newest BFFs, I got one this year!

Thanks everyone. She is staying in her room and we have all been taking extra vitamin C for a week now. I work in an elementary school so I always wash my hands several times a day and have built up a pretty good immune system. I'm just praying that DS has too.

Open the windows in your home just a little. Not enough to get it cold inside but to let a bit of fresh air in. If you have your heat on, keep it low.

Add that to washing hands constantly, using hand sanitizer, etc. Lysol spray helps too--spray anything she touches: door knobs, toilet handle, etc.

These were all things we did in the daycare and it helped keep down the spread of germs quite a bit.

Well, I have a month until my cruise so I am thankful for your warning (even though that's not what you intended!) I will grab a flu shot, for the first time ever, and I also wish you all well!

We have a cruise coming up next month too, and I understand your worries.

DH and I do get flu shots, but I know they don't cover all strains of the flu. I wash my hands a lot, and try to keep my hands off my face, but I always still pray we don't come down with anything before our cruises. We do always take out insurance for them, but still, it would be awful having to cancel because of the flu.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that no one else in your family gets sick!!

I asked for Tamiflu for the rest of us but my doctor won't give it unless we have symptoms. So I'm keeping a close watch and will call her as soon as I see something.

My dd has in the past had both swine flu(had gotten the shot 2 days before but was already exposed) and had the flu one year in Jan. after having had the flu shot in Nov. DH, other dd and I never got either flu and I usually catch everything the kids get. So disinfect and keep healthy and hopefully the rest of your family won't get it.
