least maligned profession?

So, I wondering, what do YOU think is the most loved, least maligned profession?

I'm a teacher (and a union member ) and know that we are often lauded but often also blamed for society's ills.

Police officers are trusted peace keepers, but there's also the "dirty cop" stereotype.

Doctor's save our lives but may also be seen as arrogant, money-grubbing shills for big pharma.

Soldiers are heroes, sacrificing for our freedom but are sometimes portrayed as psychopaths intending to take out villages full of innocent children, especially in movies like Apocalypse Now, etc.

The only profession that I could think of that almost everyone seems to appreciate and respect is firefighting. What do you think?

Think again on the firefighters. While I respect the work they do (and I could not do it) the ones I know, and I know many, are quite possibly the laziest group I can think of.

In my opinion the only universally loved profession is the beer truck driver. Everyone is happy to see that guy or girl.

Not if you've seen Duel.

In all seriousness, I was thinking maybe the neonatal nurse. Few people would ever say that a nurse is overpaid and we know that they work hard hours. Neonatal nurses have patients who will cry and scream, but can't vocalize what they want/need. They have the patience of saints and provide much comfort for new parents who were terrified and unsure of everything.

My DSIL is a doctor specializing in geriatrics and hospice. Anybody who can do that is a saint, in my book.

I would also laud volunteers, of all sorts. Despite the occasional bad apple, 99.9% of them do great work.

As an educator, I can say that most teachers would say that cafeteria workers/bus drivers/maintenance men are great, too!

Registered Nurses are usually ranked #1 by the public as the professionals they trust the most. (Although we aren't always treated well, either, OP.)

Probably nurses. Also, OP, all of the firefighters I know are wonderful people who are amazing at their jobs. And in my area (45 mins north of NYC), firefighters are extremely respected and revered.
I am a journalist. If I remember from the Sandy Hook thread correctly, someone said journalists were "happier than pigs in slop" when that tragedy happened, so I certainly don't think my profession is the most lauded (!).

Hospice workers, nurses, nuns, and firefighters are the four professions that I generally hold in the highest esteem.

Firefighter was the first thing to come to mind - which is probably a little odd since they're all volunteers here

He may be free of consequences, but certainly not of ridicule
