The National Gingerbread Competition--SECOND PLACE!!!!!! Update in first post.

Tomorrow I take this year's entry up to the Grove Park Inn for the National Gingerbread Competition. My entry this year is very special. My mom, who passed away in June 2011 suggested it, several years ago, and this year it finally came to fruition. Mom loved snowmen and was a musician. She had a Snowman Band on a sweatshirt and suggested that it would make a great gingerbread piece. I brushed it aside for years...but this year, in her honor I decided to take on the project. I hope you like it!

http://

I came in second place in this amazing event. I will post pictures...in the next few days of some more of the crazy good pieces that I was up against. Each year the competition gets more and more difficult and this year completely blew me away. I am glad it is over!!!

I have been following you during this contest since you first entered years ago! You are SO talented. This year is just so special and you did an amazing job - I wish you the best! Keep us updated.

What day is the actual competition? Will they be showing it on Food network?

Good Luck!

Wow! That is all edible? You are really talented.

Good luck in the competition. I think you have a very good chance of winning.

Thank you Jessica,

This is my 5th year. I did not post any pictures last year, as I was pretty much an emotional wreck. I lost my mom in June and one month later on the very day of her memorial service I ended up in the hospital with a tumor in my small intestine. My recovery was extremely challenging, and building a gingerbread creation helped get me back on my feet. It was not my best work.

This year I am back, healthier than ever. I literally poured my heart and soul into this piece and truly felt my Mom right by my side every step of the way. I know she is smiling down on me.

Oh I am so sorry. I can't believe after all you endured you entered last year. Who cares if it was your best work, you were present. Just amazing.

I pray your recovery is complete - I believe it is and sending you my best wishes for this years competition.

Your Mom has guided you, but you already know that. Your work speaks volumes.

Good Luck Linda!

I,too, have followed your entries before. Sorry to hear of your illness and of the loss of your mother. Glad to know that you're better. The snowmen band is beautiful and a wonderful way to honor your mom. Best of luck to you, and please let us know the results.

This piece IS all edible. It has to be. If the judges suspect it isn't they will take a drill into it to check.

The snowmen are all gingerbread, and the 'snow' on them is grits...painted white.

The instruments are also all gingerbread. The trim is made of gumpaste, which is a candy clay.

The crates are gingerbread covered in gumpaste and the snow on the ground is confectioners sugar, granulated sugar and coconut ground in a blender.

I baked the sections of the snowmen and the penguin are baked over half round forms. Each snowman is 3 balls stacked and covered in fondant.
