i agree, schools do have there own scent. one school i went to smelled like peanut butter and grape jelly sandwichs and steamy dishwater.
The year was 1967 and i can still remember that smell.

I remember the smell of course, and the taste and texture of the hot dogs.

Also, the smell of lima beans growing on the window sill for the class project.

What, nobody remembers the buttery potato rolls in the cafeteria? That was back when the cafeteria staff actually cooked stuff.

I remember the smell of sharpened pencils.

We had an art lady who came to our classroom once a week to show us art and talk about it with us. It was the same lady all through my elementary years. She wore perfume that I thought smelled like stinky flowers. When I was in college I was walking through Hudsons and a salesperson offered me a perfume sample. It was the stinky flowers and it took me right back to 1st grade! LOL

I'm reliving it now, my son is in the same (Catholic School) I went to, everything has changed since 1983, but he gets a kick out of seeing the picture of the class of 83 in the hallway everyday and tells his friends that's my dad, funny thing is that a lot of the parents also went there I've meet up with people I haven't seen since 1983

In regards to smell, I remember we had a kid in class that was like a human equivalent to a Peanuts character (Pigpen). The smell was soooooI remember the seating chart had me sitting near him. I got my mom to ask the teacher to move me and she did. I know it may sound rude of me, but OMG I just couldn't take it.

I remember the 2 paddles in the principal's office and getting to choose between Big Red and Little Blackie for your paddling. Little Blackie hurt worse but Big Red whacked you until the glitter name "Big Red" was completely gone from the paddle.
