Question about amazon prime if you have it

I've decided to get my soon to be 11 year old a kindle fire for Christmas. I am wondering if Amazon prime would be beneficial for us. Does the lending library offer young adult/elementary books? What about the video streaming? Thanks

I wouldn't recommend it for the library. You only get 1 book a month and the selection is really limited for adults, I'd think kids would be the same.

We do use it for streaming, but again the selection is limited. If you're only going to be getting a couple of things a month you might be better off paying out of pocket.

I personally think Prime is a great value. More often than not they have the same videos as Netflix (I canceled Netflix once I got Prime) and they are cheaper than netflix ($79 a year compared to over $100 with Netflix). Plus you get free 2 day shipping and 1 book a month from the lending library.

The lending library selection is not always the best but it does have some best sellers on it such as, The Hunger Games Trilogy and The Harry Potter series.

I have had it for over a year now and I have got really spoiled with the 2 day shipping ($3.99 for 1 day) and I don't think i will ever go back to not having it unless I absolutely have to.

Just remember...if you do decide to get Prime and check out a book from the lending library, the book has to be checked out from the actual Kindle itself. If you try to do it from a computer you will be purchasing the book not checking it out. A lot of people have done this a got really mad at Amazon even though they were the ones to not read the terms.

Password protection

Remember that with prime you CAN add password protection so that your child cannot just download things but it also means that even for "prime FREE" items, YOU will have to enter the password.

I think 11 yr old is a little young to be responsible for open downloads.

I do like the convenience of 2-day shipping and I like watching some of the old sit coms like Fraser and Cheers.

Our library has a selection of ebooks but often the waiting lists are weeks if not months long for a popular or even semi-popular title. Very frustrating.

I have amazon prime and will renew it this year. Love the convenience and the free book a month from the lending library.

We love our prime and I pick up lots of free books and have found several for my son as well. Can't beat it for shipping , we also watch lots of tv series on it for free and movies.

I couldn't live without Prime. Need something? It arrives 2 days later, no shipping cost and no tax (NC). The kids both use it for their Kindles too.

Also, be sure to check out the Free App of the Day for Kindles. We've found some great apps there.

We have had Prime since it started, I think. We love it- as another poster said, you get really spoiled by getting the free 2 day shipping. I do almost all my Christmas shopping using Amazon- I just have them ship directly to my gift recipients.

For me, the free streaming video and lending library are nice little extras in addition to the free shipping. I probably would not get Prime soley for those things, but it is nice to have Prime to use with the Kindle Fire.

I have a 14 year old, and she knows to ask before she downloads or orders anything. I've never had a problem with her running up our Amazon charges.

Love Amazon prime, but haven't ever found a book that I've wanted to read.

Now - while we normally do the 2-day free shipping which is WONDERFUL - DD had a problem with her desk chair at college. We ordered a new one that was eligible for the free shipping...EXCEPT we opted to have it sent overnight. The box was ~ 30 pounds and the cost to upgrade to overnight was $4.00.

I can beat that. Last year I ordered a new foam queen sized mattress for our guest room. Free shipping with Prime, but could upgrade to Overnight for $3.99.
You bet I took it! Giant mattress in a huge heavy box. I was

I think you should be able to get a year of it for free if they still do Amazon Mom. I was able to get a year of it for free through Amazon Student (you have to have a .edu email address) and after the year was up they offered me a membership for $39/yr.
Here is the info for Amazon Mom: www.amazon.com/mom.
